Problem: Sister has a Zanussi gas cooker complete with integral gas oven. turn on the gas, gas comes out. Press ignition, gas lights. Hold gas in for required five seconds then release, gas goes out. Tried it for 5, 10, 20, 30 seconds, it still goes out.

Oddly enough, gas grill works perfectly well as does all four rings.

Any ideas?

Sounds like an FSD (flame supervision device) fault, wouldnt know for sure without looking at it. Does the gas stay on at low flame in the oven or just go out all together? Might be just a simple thing like the FSD has dislodged from its mount like OSP said call out a RGI, im in hartlepool thurs/friday but nottingham is pushing it

It comes on completely until you release the button and then it goes out. This is irrespective of how long you hold it in.

Mr I, Havin had the same problem with various cookers, there a few tempory measures you can try, but they might not work.

1. hold in the nob as usual and light the pilot, then repeatedly push the gas nob in and out but dont let the flame go out. Do this for upto a minute, as your doing it the gas will go lower and higher as you are doing it. If it works, the gas will start to come out at full speed, then you can release it completely.

2. Clean the gas pilot with a needle or pin, and clean around it with a wet cotton bud, it may just have a blockage.

Bopth ways have worked for me in the past, good luck

Because you dont bodge stuff when it comes to gas work, thats the whole point of being corgi registered so you/i or whoever can be monitored. However im sure theres some dodgy geezer out there usually found in The House of Horrors programme who would do it for yer.

Out of interest how old is the cooker? If its over 10 yrs old sometimes they cost more to fix as the parts get scarce. If its gunna be say £100 for part and labour well you can buy an new cooker out of Argos for say £200.

Dunno, about three years old. In all seriousness I wouldn't mess about with gas. When I asked about bodging I meant is there a reset button of engineers work around.

She's had a corgi man in now who said the same thing, get a new one luv, its going to cost more to fix than its worth, some circuit board apparently. Here's the real shock, because he just called in on his way home and it was round the corner from where he lives, he didn't charge anything.

I thought it sounded odd to be honest but I assumed that he knew what he was doing, mind you, I was told this second hand.

The Zanussi has an oven power printed circuit board - it cost about £100 + vat and then needs to be fitted. Bit of a waste as it's probably just one component gone on the board.
