Brilliant player, shame about his injuries. He could have gone on to challenge Robbie Mac as our all time best left back.

Going slightly off at a tangent here. The music sent me off to check out that it was Peter Paul & Mary's version of If I Had A Hammer, which it was, but I also discovered what 43 years can do to a beautiful woman.

One of the best goals I have ever had the pleasure to see at the Vic, goes down as one of if not top of my all time favourites.

Its fast even in slow motion, the keepers flailing arms and legs just add the icing to the cake!

Great vid yet again Mr Gaunt !! clappp

Although his left peg was something special and we may not see a player with a left peg like his in a Pools shirt for a long time, I have have to agree with Tree. He could not defend at all, mainly due to him being over-weight and attackers/wingers leaving him for dead time after time.

Somehow it didn't seem to matter, I've never seen a player with a harder shot. Remember that one at Tranmere? I think we lost the game but he hit a dead ball from a free kick and Achterburg never got near it. I reckon it parted his hair.

Great work again Mr Gaunt.

That Blackpool one where he had to take it again and planted it in the exact same spot is hall of fame stuff.

After the famous one against Luton I took a peek at the Luton message board. Someone ventured to suggest their goalie (a last minute stand-in I believe) might have done better with it.
Someone answered its a good job he didn't; if he'd got in the way of that shot it would have ended his career!

Shuggy really was a legend.

But ... I still reckon Tony Bircumshaw had the harder shot. What is it about full backs?

And ... I still prefer Nelson's goal in his debut against Posh. When are we going to get another one of them?

tree, you do need to chill a little. it was precisely because he wasn't such a good fullback that people took delight in his ability to rocket one in from 100 yards.

that's the whole point.

I always felt Hugh was adequate at defending. He was better at defending than the likes of Andy Jordan and Scott Walker. He was better at defending than left backs before and after him such as Matty Robson (who I feel is better on the wing), John Brackstone etc.

He wasn’t great defending but he did the job.

But he won’t be remembered that…

Yet another one of your creations Mr Gaunt, I'd not tire of watching. Top marks

clappp clappp  clappp clappp

Might be worth starting work on a "James Brown, I feel good" one cos I think he'll be on his way in January the way he's performing
