not saying they're trying to sound like the brilliant, innovative White Stripes, just saying that it does!

Show me Ian Brown's "Genius" Jish. The White Negroes are better.

And The White Stripes aren't even a band, they're HALF a band. No Bass=No Band.

This idea that the White Stripes are automatically rubbish because they have no bass player is just daft. Surely whether something is good or bad should be judged on its own merit, regardless of whether it meets some rigid criteria.
Agree with you about Ian Brown mind. il est tres tres mal.

The song F.E.A.R is in my opinion the work of genius which he is given very little credit for. I appreciate that he’s not to everyone’s taste but I think he is a talented fella. For example, on his first album Unifinished Monkey Business, he not only wrote the lyrics and provided the vocals, he contributed to the drums, keyboard, and both rhythm and bass guitar. Pretty good for someone with no talent I reckon. Admittedly, since then he has used his band, session musicians and special guests.

There was a good interview I read recently where he was asked about if he would reform The Stone Roses. His reply was along the line of he can now travel the world to play to packed audiences and pick and choose who he can collaborate with if he so wishes. Why would he want to reform them?

Can’t vouch for him not being a thug like. Peter Buck allegedly did the same thing but nothing happened to him.

As for The White Stripes, they consistently write great songs and they are an excellent live duo and one of the best bands I have ever seen (and I have seen thousands of bands) I particularly like the way that they don’t choose a set-list and everything is spontaneous. Not many bands would be able to do that at the drop of a hat.

It’s all personal choice though. I’m not keen on a lot of stuff that ECG likes and others on this board, but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

I think that the White Stripes and The Stone Roses are excellent, their music top notch.

PS. Please note my signature below before telling me how rubbish they are, or how rubbish you think that they are.

music should be about so much more than a singer, drums, lead guitar (or whatever you call it) and bass.
Verse verse chorus, verse verse chorus, guitar solo, repeat chorus until fade.
Its what makes music repetetive and dull.
Some people can make music with anything - or without anything. Thats a talent.
Personally I'm not bothered about the White Stripes but its nothing to do with them not having a bass guitar

I said yesterday that I think FEAR is an excellent track. I don't really care who wrote it or performed on it, it's one of those tracks that has an awful lot of power behind it, bit like Massive Attacks Unfinished Symphony.

I'm no music buff, far from it, but I do like listening to a wide variety of stuff.

I've got another 'powerful' one for ya, I am the Black Gold of the Sun by Nuyorican Soul, ooooh great track.

Regarding Ian Brown - while I loved the Roses stuff growing up, his solo stuff leaves a lot to be desired. Possibly only 'Corpses In Their Mouths' that can stand alongside any of the Roses stuff in my opinion. I also think he's crap live, stops and starts far too often to mask the fact that his voice is shot.

I've never got the White Stripes, there are lot better bands doing the same type of thing as them (Soledad Brothers, Black Keys f.e.).

Agreed. If The Comforts Of Madness was released right now by someone like Arcade Fire it would be deemed an all-time classic.

Very underrated indeed!

The White Stripes are crap. I don't like the sweaty paper-thin moustache the singer has and the lass behind the drums can fuck off. The video to Hardest Button to Button was good though, and you can never fault the work of Michel Gondry with Fell in Love With a Girl (also did Star Guitar and Let Forever Be for the Chemical Brothers... absolute genius... not that any of you will watch them like  )

The Stone Roses have aged badly, but they're still okay.

Supergrass are unbelievable... their Best Of album was nigh-on faultless

Nice to see an appreciation for arguably one of the most underappreciated British acts of recent years

The Chemical Brothers the English equivalent of Air - a band where their music gets everywhere and people like it, but don't know who it's by

Jack White uses that octave pedal thing anyways, which gives a bassier sound

so, what d'ya think of the Racontuers, they have bass and a proper [male] drummer....

The White stripes remain one of the best bands I have ever seen

I seen the Pale Saints at the town hall supporting someone, cant think who mind, they were dead good - but I never really followed up from there...my loss it would seem

John Spencer Blues Explosion - no bass, awesome band.

The White Stripes - the group that came to fame by unsyncopating Mackem Dave Stewart's riff from Sweet Dreams.

Try it - Seven Nation Army and Sweet Dreams superimpose perfectly.
