I was wondering if there was any way of altering the settings for the board so that clicking on links (posted by other posters) causes the link to open in a new window rather than the same window.

It's a bit dangerous in terms of security to automatically open a new window but theres an easy fix. When you click a link press the shift key at the same time.

If you're running IE7 then just click the wheel in the middle of the mouse when over the link (intead of one of the buttons) and it opens in a new tab.
