Who is excited by this coming final and who has more interesting things to do?

We just realised the other day that we have something booked for Sat night, from a long time back. We're going to have to do a Likely Lads...record the match, and then rush home with closed eyes and ears so that we don't see the score before watching it

I concur with Mr Head, last Saturday I watched two England games. The first was football primadonnas prancing around on £100'000 a week and didn't really give a shite, particularly in the send half. The second was a fantastic display of guts, teamwork, courage and patriotism that I've never seen outside the armed forces.

I don't pretend to be a rugby expert but for sure I reassessed my thoughts on the England football team.

Mr Mad John after that remark you'd better be able to tell me who the top two are in the footy premiership without looking.

I just looked at the table and boy did I get the first two wrong.

Mind they don't half change positions quick. Two weeks ago I would have been right. It's this damn world cup that's ruining club rugby!

Amazingly enough I think I can

But on reflection, you have a point and I'll make my future question a little easier, like maybe name ANY five Premiership teams, or name the domestic clubs that any four England players play for. Most of these rugby tourists who spout shite in the pub wouldn't have a clue.

The thing that makes me laugh the most is this crap about the sport being some sort of benchmark for honesty. Like sure, all those mis-shapen faces are a result of hours spent in honest sporting pursuit, and not at all the result of cowardly attacks in the scrum or on the blind-side of the ref.

I honestly don't mind rugby too much, it's mainly the smarmy, casual yet know-it-all fans

And lets not forget the fact the Frogs tried to cheat on Saturday and got caught big time

Also its sooooo fecking complicated, oooh its gone forwards, oooh he touched it, he didn't, you've scored have another go, here comes the ball, we'll lift you in the air

And its shite

I hope England win, just as I hope England win at most sports even if I don't care about them but I find the game pretty tedious. You can't see the ball half the time FFS. I'll be getting pissed Saturday night anyway so it makes no odds on my alcohol consumption.

On Saturday, if i had a choice between Pools drawing/England losing the world cup and Pools losing/England winning the World Cup, I would go for the first choice anyday.

As bleedin' usual, it'll kick off at 3am here BUT I have discovered TVU which has Star Sports Asia on it and they're re-running it at 9am Sunday in it's entirety. So I'll watch it with coffee and bacon sarnies WITHOUT logging onto anything else first so no sneaky fookin' e-mails....

Don't you think this is a two-way process though? The match officials' attitude to players should also be questioned.
In other words rugby players don't give lip because they know it could end up costing their side the game. You could see in Argentinian vs SA that some players were biting their lips and would have loved to let fly.

The big difference is that rugby referees are ex players of a good standard, whereas football referees belong to the same mindset as traffic wardens, coppers and the snotty skinny kid who always got picked on at school.

Which clubs were those of you who played rugby attached to?
My dad used to play for H'pool Rovers (not that I'm suggesting any of you are old enough to have known him.....)

This attitude towrds rugby referees is a fookin myth.

My young played footy at Brinkburn on Sunday. No one questioned the Referee. Afterwards we watched Mr Eds youngun play Rugby for West.

You had to hear it, to believe the abuse the Referee took from the West "fans".

Oh how I chuckled as I thought of the upper class twits acting like that.......and what they actually think of themselves in relation to us S-O-C-C-E-R TYPES. rolfl rolfl

My dad wasn't an upper class twit, tho...he was a turner at Richardson and Westgarth.... confised

Jason Robertson has never been an upper class twit. He was a heavy drinking, street wise hoodlum. Mark Gregan?? Upper class? I think not. It's just an image that the game carries but the game quietly got on with building an infrastructure that should be the envy of many sports. If we'd done the same with tennis and athletics we'd be taken much more seriously around the world. We've had some cracking rugby teams and clubs in Hartlepool.

Not at all. I'm a rugby fan, always have been since I was taught the game at the snooty upper class Hartlepool Grammar School. I possess several replica shirts, I've been to Twickenham, seen England play in Marseilles, watched Sale Sharks at Stockports ground etc.

But if you haven't heard of Jason Robinson, Billy Whizz, as he is also known, you must be purposefully avoiding the game at which England are World Champions.

Which is plain daft as an Englishman. We aren't that good at much.

West player meself 1969 to 1982. Round about 71-73 I was in and out of the firsts. I even got my name on the back page headlines of the Footy Mail once, though they managed to spell it wrong!
Strangely enough, Anth Cheshire, who played in Rovers firsts at the time, bought the house next door to me in Billingham, just by chance

I might have met your dad Grabe but it's hardly likely I played against him. Mind, I did play against Stan Hodgson of Durham City when he was knocking 50 like.
I played against Billy Beaumont once and got completely owned.

Yeah his "Anth" and "Tony" appellations were always more or less interchangeable.
He was Rovers' Billy Whizz at the time. Also a great high jumper for a smallish guy but with the weirdest style you ever saw. He more or less hurdled the bar!

Bloody hell - P.Wood was an integral part of one of the best back rows West ever had - along with Peter Robinson and Tony Savage if I remember rightly ...
