Good to see the man back from the brink - always liked a bit of orange juice. Now I've gone all pretentious tonight having bought Charlie Haden's 'Liberation Music Orchestra' today for a fiver in the sale today. Always wanted to hear this album. I'm no great jazz buff but I do like Miles/Coltrane/Mingus/Sun Ra/Weather Report and Canonball Adderley amongst others. Gonna take a few listens this one. Also playing Be Bop Deluxe in the car (Air Age Anthology). Other than some rather excellent fish and chips, great Tetley's and excellent nights out at Tiffany's as a young un, Nelson is the best thing about Wakefield I reckon.

as did a large percentage of the audience.

Only band I ever saw in Wakefield (apart from covers acts) was an incarnation of one of Bill Bruford's fusiony type bands. Very good they were too. Wakefield was an excellent night out if you liked the simple life - beer (pub)/curry/beer (Tiffany's). I think you confuse mental health with mining. Top lads miners.

good choices Chip.edwyn collins is a great album, cherry ghost quite decent too.
I saw king creosote supporting squeeze a few weeks back, quite impressed.
listening to the Wallbirds I think they're from wakefield as are the cribs but lets not go there.
best thing about wakefield was the westgate run,a row of about 15 pubs in one small street

The Black Rock was my favourite dawlishmonkey - Tetley's and a carpet you stuck to when you walked. No doubt the carpet has gone and the clientele will have changed but the Tetley's will still be there, of that I have little doubt, although most folk will drink lager these days. Draught Tetley's the finest session beer imo.

ugh, generic indie sh it

my favourite band from Leeds, other than the Wedding Present, is the vastly under-rated d'Astro.

Pigeon Detectives are excellent - weddoes were smashing and I have never heard of d'astro but the best band out of Leeds by a country mile was The Gang Of Four. Absolutely awesone and massively influential. Without 'em there's no Franz Ferdinand for instance.

Personally I enjoyed FFs first album - some cracking pop songs - but I wouldn't want another, for me they have a limited range. But The Gang of Four - that's proper music that is. Is it your viking ancestory that encourages your view on how to win an argument? rolf

Sufjan Stevens - Songs For Christmas for me today, trying to get myself into the mood.

Lots of excellent 'individual' Christmas songs I like but the only complete album that does it for me - "the phil spector christmas album"! I Have only heard bits of Sufjan Stevens but none of his Christmas album. I'll go searching for snippets to play on Amazon/i-Tunes now.

Tonight it's Jeff Beck's 'Truth' for me. As much as I love Zeppelin those who know Beck's work will know that it was he and not Mr Page who invented heavy rock as we know it. Beck of course is the only man to give Hendrix a run for his money - can't split 'em in my book.

You Really Shook me is on both Truth and Zep 1 for those who care to compare - Plant is a better 'rock' singer than Rod the mod although Rod is a better singer overall imo. I love Rod (until he went off the rails after Smiler of course) and I especially love the Faces (small or otherwise). Some of the finest and most influential British talent - Marriot also top of the blue eyed soul tree with Rod and Winwood. Traffic material has stood up better than most over the years - I play it a lot. And although I'm an old git I hope to receive the (relatively) new Burial in my stocking this Christmas along with Aretha's new rareities thing. Old and greedy I am.

Traffic (live) and the Faces (small version) are ace.
Both Winwood and Spencer Davis got better after the split, as did Jethro Tull and Mick Abrahams.
Steve Marriot on the other hand got to be shite after the split.
Plant is good in certain songs, lousy in others.
Jeff Beck I can't be bothered with.
The inventors of heavy rock are Ozzy Osbourne and Tommy Iommi.
Rod Stewart could have been good if only he'd sung the right songs (and avoided being Scottish).
Anything else?

I'm taking on these beauties...

Brilliant album. Hints of Scott Walker and Stephin Merritt but it sounds fresh. Lots of clever but subtle samples too. My favourite album for a long, long time

Got everything else so I thought it was time to complete the collection.

Burial 'Untrue' is as good as the reviews say it is and is ideal for this time of night. Aretha's Rare and Unreleased Recordings is nothing short of astounding and has been played every day since receipt on Christmas day. I have also listened to Jill Scott's 'The Real Thing Words and Sounds Vol 3' today. Mrs Heat took a punt on this and popped it in my stocking - total suprise but as good as this modern soul stuff get's. If you like Badou you will like this.

My daughter took delivery of the Dykeenies - I will listen to it on your recommendation Dawlish.

I am a Southside Johnny fan (fantastic live) - This Time It's For Real is an absolute belter. I found Better Days on Amazon market place for 90 odd pence. It came Friday - Miami Steve Van Zandt writes almost everything, Bruce pops up for a chorus and the whole thing is a great rousing brass fuelled delight and was great in the car today.

That lad is exceptional. I love his earlier stuff, not so sure about the folktronica direction that he seemed to have gotten into the last time I saw him though. Always a pleasure to see him live.

I like what I've heard from him, good stuff. Some top collaborators on that album as well; Emmy the Great, Conor Oberst etc. His old band Testicicles weren't half bad either.

For me this week...

Sparklehorse - Dreamt For Light Years In The Belly Of A Mountain
Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism
British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music?

To be honest, I can't get into it. I was there biggest fan a couple of years ago and spent most of winter 2005 travelling the length and breadth of the country watching them play. As a live band they're unbeatable (foliage, stuffed animals, WWII outfits etc.) but this album is just...stadium rock. All of the magazines and papers have been raving about it but to me it's disappointing to say the least.

I'd recommend their first album though, The Decline Of British Sea Power. If you're into Echo and the Bunnymen, Pixies and Bowie then you'll like it.

Agreed - these boys write a beautiful song.

Rubycon (Tangs), Joy Of A Toy (Kevin Ayers) and Silver Apples Of THe Moon (Laika - talk about under rated) for me this evening.

When you did albums of the year I think you missed LCD Sound System : Sound Of Silver (just a thought).
