"Crawling
Over your window you think I'm confused
I'm waiting for the divergent wasp
To complete my current ruse
You use a plate-glass screen
To protect my chosen target
But there's an air-pellet hole
I can crawl through to you
I am the fly in the ointment
I can spread more disease than the fleas
Which nibble away at your window display
Yes I am the fly in the ointment
I shake you down to say please as you
Accept the next dose of disease....
I am the fly I am the fly I am the fly I am the fly fly in the fly in the ointment...."

I've just bought a usb turntable from Netto (£50 down from £100) so i'm currently converting all kinds of beauties that i've never found on CD. (I do a lot of driving so it's nice to have them on in the car)

I've just unearthed this pearler that i haven't listened to for about 10 years!

Mr Townend,is the software with the turntable easy enough ?I could do with a decent programme to use for converting old cassettes to CD.

Sorry for the late reply. It seems easy enough. It doesn't specify that you can convert cassettes with the software, but i imagine you can. (I'm not very techincal)

The best I can do is tell you that it took all of 5 minutes to get up and running.

'back to the old school - Sugar Hill Club Classics'. Full of great stuff. Drop The Bomb - Trouble Funk a particular favourite. Hotel, motel, holiday inn - this is where it all began I reckon (unless you count The Last Poets) :sweeeet:

Records shops are dead (almost). Big chains lack excitement and indies struggle for price I think. Best for me by a mile was (is) Fopp. Expanding like a big expanding thing; bought Music Zone and went bust. Re-opened and now owned by HMV in half a dozen locations - fortunately for me one of these is in Manchester where I do missionary work on behalf of the white rose.

Any way - Untrue was released 5/11 and is available for 7 quid on amazon (+p&p). Has only had rave reviews as far as I can see and is on my xmas list (are you watching mrs heat?).

Tend to buy all my stuff on line using the Amazon market place where imports from the USofA are generally as cheap as chips (no pun intended) even after p&p. Anyway you know all this so I look forward to reading your review.

Talking of christmas - and what am I listening to! Just making up this CD for my sister-in-law as a 'table gift' for chrissy day.

Have bought CDs (and vinyl) in Newcastle - Windows (?) is good. Remember treating another sister in law to Trout Mask from there when she graduated many years ago. She in return introduced me to the first Nick Cave solo album and I've not stopped buying the great man's stuff since. Don't know alt but do know Spin (I think) and the one opposite just off the Big Market.

Nick Drake I play on the headphones from the i-Pod when I can't sleep. Sorts things out sharpish. A genius I think.

Chic - At Last I Am Free, what a song and even better by the god like Robt Wyatt.

Tiersen played at last spring's All Tomorrow's Parties festival and I wasn't really aware of his stuff until I got hold of some to listen to shortly before the event. I had seen Amelie and Goodbye Lenin but I hadn't made the connection to him. I love the album he recorded with Shannon Wright.

The Decemberists sadly cancelled their recent gig at Newcastle a few days before it was supposed to take place (they have since cancelled their entire tour, due to ill health). I was looking forward to seeing a band that I like a lot but have never caught live. confised

Speaking of Shannon Wright, her Dyed In The Wool is drifting out of my speakers right now, and it is almost tempting to sack the match and listen some more. But only almost

Tiersen's a genius. That Amelie soundtrack is perfect from start to finish and the film is wonderful as well (anything with the beautiful Audrey Tautou can't fail to be good, the Da Vinci Code excepting!) The accordion is a much under used instrument.

I had a ticket to that Decemberists gig as well, a big shame that they cancelled as I've never seen them either. Meloy is one of the best lyricists going.

Love the Amelie soundtrack Tiersen has done some stuff with Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy. Quality stuff.

Also love The Decemberists. Yankee Bayonet is a song i'll never tire of hearing.

I've been getting into this recently.

Absolutely brilliant. Check out the link below for a sample

I already have that album, absolute brilliance indeed. The guy who plays accordion/harmonium on that album is Lemony Snicket. Peter Gabriel has even covered some of it!

Well one of those songs was indeed the theme tune to Amélie with Neil's words added and it's an absolute cracker.
The only other I know of they did together is Life on Mars - yes the David Bowie song.

As for the accordion, it's great in small doses!

I decided I wanted to listen to something really over the top, the most OTT song I could ever remember hearing.

I started with the Blues Brothers but that didn't do the trick.
So then I tried Queen but I'd heard it all too often.
Then I tried Meatloaf, and I sensed I was starting to get there at last...

Until finally I remembered this then I knew I'd found my goal!

3 excellent choices there like......... particularly Icicle Works...... really wanted to go and see them on their recent tour, have seen them many times before....... but logistics and not being able to drive fuck me up a bit for gigs....

The Icicle Works really ought to have been one of the biggest name groups this country ever produced. I'd easily put them in the top five alongside names like the Beatles, Stones, Dire Straits, Police. I'm not stating preferences I'm talking about FAME.

Absolutely awesome. Never get tired of hearing them.

That was amazing Monty, or Donny or whatever your new name will be  , but I still think this version is so much better than Thomas Jones Woodwards original version.

there was a programme on channel 4 called the secret millionaire and they played 10 seconds of this song and it was driving me nuts trying to recall what it was.

eventually it came to me, it was track 3 on mogwai's mr beast album. so i turned the television off and listened to the album in full instead.

it really is a quite, quite breathtakingly wondrous work of art.

dunno about the tv programme though.

One of the Top Gear production team must love it as well cos every time I've caught a snippet of it a track off Mr Beast seems to accompany it.

Well it doesn't seem to want to play from that link so try this one....

That was amazing Monty, or Donny or whatever your new name will be  , but I still think this version is so much better than Thomas Jones Woodwards original version.

Have to agree billingham but the Rusians and SAHB are just playing at it - this is proper 'over the top'.

Pretty good WLWH. Don't know much about KISS apart from the make up.

Strange Journeys that this thread and YouTube can take you on. I've went from the Russian Army Choir to SAHB to Jacques Brel tonight. I don't know what he is singing about, but it has brought tears to my eyes.

I thought I knew the tune. Rod McKuen wrote 'If You Go Away' as part of a project to translate Brel's work, which has become a 'standard' and recorded by a lot of 'Artistes'

I'm guessing you arrived at Brel via Alex Harvey's Next ("Au Suivant").

Listen, Brel was a true genius, a fookin giant, the kind you get only once every thousand years. I mean, heaven knows we've had some great songwriters in the UK but Brel just leaves them all standing. There isn't one I could honestly compare to him. But you have to speak French to really appreciate him. The translations simpy can't do his work justice.

And the good news is .. he wasn't French he was Belgian!

Here's one you may or may not know BP ...

A searing performance from his last Olympia concert, Jacques Brel enacts a story of young man who is rejected by his girls petit bourgeois family. He proceeds to demolish the members one by one. The incredible facial expressions, hand movements and body language, as well as the simple mesmeric two chord accompaniment add an unparalled theatricality to this performance.

Simone is the top of the pile for me Mr Head - she can do all of that and much much more I feel.

Listening to The Who -My Generation (Deluxe edition) just now. Arrived today from Play.com. £6 post paid - a real bargain I reckon and a fine album from the best 'rock' act of all time.

Why do they issue deluxe editions across two CDs when they remaster these days. Just a really good master of the original album, no frills at a competetive price is all I ever want. So I stick to my vinyl Daydream Nation. But a great album I have to agree. Humble Pie 'Performance - Rockin' The Fillmore' tonight for me plus Girl Crazy (28 ultimate girl group classics). How good are Leader of the Pack, Lovers Concerto, He's So Fine and all the rest. Top stuff at a bargain price.
