wonder if people in your boat or in a military family have a different outlook to this question than someone like me who do not know any ex service folk or have a military family connection apart from the ones forced into it with conscription.

My Dad and his brother said they never thought about it..My Dadjoined the Merchant Navy in 1940 on completion of his apprentice ship at Richardsons Westgarth and his brother in 1942 on completion of his apprenticeship at the same place and joined the Royal Navy on torpedo boats in the channel. Never talked about.
My mam’s dad, my Granda, went down in the channel in 1940…again, nothing ever spoken.
The wife’s Granda was killed at the very end of WW1 aged 21, classed as a deserter but actually wounded and German first aiders took him away but he died and was buried by them near their cemetery…and eventually awarded the Military Medal.
Again nowt said.

I have a few family members who served in Falklands and Gulf war and they never mention it at all. It must be to do with the horrors of war I guess. Also none of the ones still alive came back the same person who left. I employed a good bloke for 5 years who was a part time territorial I believe he was a Sargent, he was called up to the Gulf but on his return he was a shadow of the personality that left and never wanted to mention anything about the war and resigned after one week back at work.

good points there that adds to something i have always thought. the less active service a forces personell has done the more they rattle on about it. best example was the ex SAS fellow bus inspector who collected stamps but you only got information about him via a third party. that only came out when he didn,t check the late night buses and i had to take his place. called him a soft bastard only to be told thats the last thing about him but his training could actually kill someone if he was surprised by a drunk grabbing him.
