Triple decker - very poor examples considering Watson n Stevo where almost 8 years younger than brown is now.

Like I said it's not a signing that I would get excited about, he's a clogger, an old school kicker, not my type of player

Watched brown a few times last season and he looked ok and that was championship level. He did like a yellow card or 2 but at league 2 playing defensive midfield I fail to see what age has to do with it. If he's good enough that is all that matters.

I very much doubt we would make 1 marquee signing again. Surely we wouldn't make that mistake again. He would be part of a jigsaw that has a a fair few missing pieces.

If he was to get a large portion of the budget then its a no but if not i think he is just the type of player to help get us back into league 1

Fair enough , I mentioned Watson as he was widely seen as a big injury risk when we signed him, given his history
I thought Stephenson was older than 30 when we signed him, my mistake.

Some rubbish being talked on this thread like people hedging their bets so if he is shite they can tell you I told you so.

He was getting a game for a decent Leeds side the the Champ last season.

As he has links to Hartlepool there is a chance we could get him on the cheap he is already a millionaire several times over (or should be).

He will probably go to someone better than us, but it depends on budget does it not?

He wont get close to 10k a week anywhere now but give him a coaching role and we may get a good deal!

Citing players who have previously fail at an older age is bizarre, what baring has Steve Howard or Peter Beardsley got over whether Brown would be a success?

If he signed n turned out shite that would give me zero pleasure as it would be at the expense of my club on the field so I'd take no pleasure in it.

Howard was playing for Leicester the year before he signed for us n solano was at hull playing before he signed for us so where he was in the 2013/14 season means bugger all.

I just don't really want to spunk most of our budget on a 37 year old, I'd rather sign younger guys, who want to make a career at pools or we'd at least get 2/3 years from to build a team round and then even sell on.

Anyone know if Brown has a good fist pump? Crucial to our recruitment these past few years

To be fair we did get our money's worth out of Marco Gabbiadini even if he was shot after 12 starts. Injuries can happen at any age but at 35 his was one too far.

Howard and Solano weren't playing much at all. The fact you think teams don't need defensive midfielders these days shows you don't know anything about football anyway. All teams at the top level play with 1 sometimes 2 holding players

Clearly age has a lot to do with it, otherwise the better outfield players would still be playing well into their Forties. Its a sad fact that as you get older your body deteriorates and you are no longer able to do the things you used to.

Football is a lot faster and more athletic than it once was and thats why you dont get too many players aged 35+ playing 40+ games a season in midfield. Simply being " good enough " isnt sufficent, you have to be " good enough " twice a week for most of a 9 month season. Something Brown hasnt done for quite some time.

As Mad Johns stats prove, we havent signed many players over 35 that were able to do that. The likes of Howard, Solano, and Beardsley, weren't even able/willing to train. The majority stuck it out for 10-15 games then got fed up.

Brown might be an exception. He might be super fit and come with a superb attitude and be willing to train as hard as everyone else once the bad weather kicks in. I wouldnt be upset if he signed, but like you say , it would be a big gamble investing a big chunk of the budget on one player. We did that with Howard with disastrous consequences.

The point I was making regarding age, is defensive midfielders don't have to be ultra fit mobile young uns. Understanding of the game and being good enough would quite easily get brown through games in league 2. However it is a fair point regarding playing twice a week.

Reading above he played 19 90 mins last year and was subbed a few times. He was injured aswell so its not as if fitness was an issue last season for the bloke. I cannot see how brown is being compared to Howard. Completely different players. Howard's 2nd spell was disgraceful, its gona take a hell of alot to compare to that.

Solano played 12 games for hull the year before he signed for us, Howard 20 at Leicester, brown 19 last year, so all roughly about the same, as to be expected for men of there ages.

Teams survive n Play without proper defensive midfielders at every single level, give me high energy combative midfielders getting about the park every day of the week rather than a clogger sitting infront of the back 4 struggling to play 20 games whilst drawing in our biggest wage.

At end of the day its a matter of personal preference as to whether you want to sign players with a year at most left in them. Some do and some dont, theres no right or wrong answer. Likewise whether you want to play with a Walton like virtual 5th defender. You might even want to play one away from home but not at home. I certainly wouldnt agree with the comment about all the top sides always playing with at least one and sometimes two mind.

Brown looks to have played about the same number of minutes than Howard did his last season in the Championship, so its a reasonable comparison in that regard. Brown on the other hand may have a higher level of fitness and a more willing attitude towards training.

I thought Mad Johns list of old fogeys was interesting. A couple of half decent players in that list, a couple of absolute dogs an all I have to say.

Brown 1055 minutes, starts 12

Howard 493 minutes, starts 3

not so reasonable if you ask me....

I can think of one evergreen former Pools player who would make lots of Poolies happy if he re-signed.

I didn't add them up I used soccerway.

I saw him a few times as Leeds are omnipresent on TV even in Asia.

Brown started the last 6 games of the season consecutively.

I am not saying we should sign him if we could get him on a good deal he would be an asset. If I was running Pools I would target younger players in lower leagues and look to sell them on for a fee but you still need some experience.

50/50 myself.

If he has earned enough from the game and will accept a League 2 wage from his home town club then snap him up but other wise - meh.

I am not hedging my bets I will say if Brown signed for us he would be our best midfielder since Dean Emerson, Jan Ove Pedersen and Mark Tinkler. He would not join us for the money as he would undoubtedly get far better offers from bigger clubs than us. It might just be that he wants to finish his career at his home town club and after his top career money won't be an issue. At the present time I have absolutely no intention of buying a season ticket for next season. If Brown signed for us I would be the first one down the Ticket Office to buy one. He would indeed be a cartwheel signing by Ken if he could pull it off.

There were still some good 0ver 35's playing not only league football but premier league last season....Giggs...Lampard (and going to a World Cup) Ferdinand..Distin. Throw in a couple of keepers with Friedel..Harper and even Jaaskelainen. It not about a figure representing their age it about how they've looked after themselves over the years. Like Chip I've not seen him enough to comment, but the figures showing played last 6 games of last season says to me fitness is not a worry. I would think wages would be more of a worry and like Yubep if they're going to take up to much of budget then is it worth the risk for one season and no return.

And Kevin Poole is still on Burton's books at the grand old age of 50, unless they've released him this close season

This is four pages of noise about a rumour and to be honest, if it happens, I'll plait sand. If he lives in Manchester, he'll go to Oldham, Fleetwood or Bury or somewhere else local to him.

Isn't this what all football fans do in the summer spender? Talk about targets n linked players.

It's what this place is for.

Sometimes I think you miss the point of being a football fan at times.

The very game. It was Viv Anderson who I spotted in the chippy and got to pose with the mag.

A cracking night that, part of the Jon Daly purple patch, and also featuring a Joel special.

The only down side was the sound of two blokes bumming in the cubicle next to where I was having my interval piss.

It was Grimsby's biggest defeat of the season.

The online fanzine was called the Electronic Fishcake and the reports on that game and especially on the 8-1 win three years earlier are unquestionably the funniest thing I've ever read involving a football match.
The articles seem to have disappeared from the Web but they contained classics like (wording approximate)

"...Strachan's free kick found the unmarked Groves, who made no mistake from 6 yards out" (own goal in the 8-1 win)

"...please mummy, make them go away" (after the 4th goal in the 1-4 win)

Great place that, if anyone takes hallucinogens and wants somewhere 'different' then it will be ideal.

I was told a couple of weeks ago that he didn't want to move house and he lives in the Manchester area so Port Vale stacks up. I'd have loved to see him here he's the type of player we need.

Prutton is the one I'd like to see us sign now. He fits the bill, good footballer and a bit dirty.
