Walking away, I was also feeling good about the events of the weekend, and what I'd seen tonight, until we had the misfortune to witness a 'chav' dispute on the road near to the ex garland buildings, which then followed us along the road, and then almost turned into an international incident, when they decided to take on the Russian Navy, or at least a small part of it, near the Historic Quay. Needless to say the spineless bastards backed down, as soon as they realised that 5 lads in uniform were quite prepared to take on 10 or so of the losers.

Would have been funny to see them run away.

Am not sure what army it was (maybe Phillipines?) but they were as smart as a carrot.

Takes more than track suit bottoms to impress me.

I went today , during the day and early to bout hr ago when got got home.

I actually thought before it started it would be Hartlepool's Olympics. Cost fortune to host and lose money.

Have to say I was well impressed, ships the stalls etc, now not being a music lover I won't comment on what I saw/listened to, but I didn't mind it.

I would actually say we should try to win /bid for it again.

Hopefully I won't be proved right and we(the town) have lost money.

It isn't just dogs who are being brought out to this type of event. BP, Dave & I went to see Ocean Colour Scene last night and thoroughly enjoyed the show, however stood a few yards in front of us were a couple with one baby in a pram and a toddler in a pushchair - Why sctatchinghead
I realise that they may have wanted to see OCS but surely couldn't they get someone to keep any eye on their bairns at home for an hour or so.

PS - BP & Dave returned back just after midnight after enjoying The Doves, but weren't too impressed with Echo and the Bunnymen

I enjoyed the day I went, thought the area was scruffy as like - but take parmo and snowy's point!

surely the bands were a little aside to the main attraction!!!

chip, can you remember a bunnymen song called 'rust'? [cant think of its name], seen em play it years ago and I Mac then described that as the best song ever written [he's quite the modest chap]......I do love nothing ever lasts forever though, in fact all those tunes above are mintash! maybe's shot the killing moon on too

thought both bands were excellent, if for no other reason than they were playing in hartlepool !! thoroughly impressed with the whole event and think bidding to host it again is a great idea.

The parade of sail was a bit of a washout today, pity, there was a lot of disappointed spectators. The most entertainment we got was a drunken rarf in a poolie shirt singing from his top floor flat off Maritime Avenue (opposite Ensign Ct facing the sea) If I'd had a gun I'd have shot the damned bounder stpid

It will certainly boost some egos for the next couple of weeks and also give the mail something to print. Then it will be back to normal and big council tax rises to cover the losses made on the event.
P.S. I bet the camera happy folk were over the moon using the films up on the "for let" signs on the marina!!

The council dot pay for owt to do with it, it is funded by the 'Tall Ships' and of course it cost more then the event over in toxic Teeside, the Tall Ships is a massive event, the one in St.Ockton isn't

Why would the council need to increase our council tax for this event when it's probably made a shed load of money from it?

Lightning Tree you would moan against anything.

You get in pools for about 6 pence a match i bet thats 5p too much.

You could be shaggin kelly brook and you'd still complain.

I never had any preconceived idea what the Tal Ships was (apart from Tall Ships obviously!) or any expectations of the event but I don't think anything has left me feeling as good about the Town I live.

Which is the best thing I can say about it really. I hope we host it again.

there was still shedloads of folk lined up along the headland at 6 o clock when we finally made our way home having been down there since 3 o clock.

yeah it rained, but given the weather forecast most people were suitably attired and also took umbrellas.

it was very emotional when the indonesians left the dock. second off last boat to leave but everyone seemed to have decided to ignore the rain to stick around and make sure they got a big send off.

which they did.

Good to see you really turned into a convert about the tall ships. I've been in the town at some point for all four days, probably haven't done that for 20 or more years. It has to be the best thing to happen to Hartlepool since the Play Off Final, and gone on to exceed it tenfold.

Salty, Rust was on an album they released about ten years ago, the one before Flowers. Can't remember its name. If you heard it years ago it was probably pretty new at the time.

Edit: just checked, the album was called What Are You Going To Do With Your Life?, released in 1999

I was reading this morning that the port authority has had more than a thousand enquiries from corporate companies, and a number of businessmen are believed to have asked about the viability of setting up in the town.

Would be a canny place to invest in. Dont think I've ever walked over that bit of land, before the weekend. It has some cracking views out to sea from there. Think a bit of Newcastle's QuaySide's success has come from the tall ships event being there too.

A jobs boost would be great for the town but if you are talking a thousand enquiries I'm sure the council must have a fabulous spin doctor.
Why would any employer want to come to Hartlepool when the majority of the unemployed are happy to sit on their arse claiming benefits.
I think they also want to start cleaning the place up before they show any prospective employers around, it makes Graythorpe look like foooking Dubia.

You have a nerve. 13 out of the last 15 years I've had a full price season ticket, last season and this season I pay 175 bar as groovys carer.
You're the only "pools fan" I know who is a member of more messageboards than matches he's been to in the last couple of years.

Last season it was pointed out to me by someone at the club that because of my disabled status I am allowed to have a companion with me free of charge when I attend a football match (and at most music venues too).
I have gone to Pools with Mr Lightning Tree for a lot of years & still do so I approached him to ask if he wanted my companions ticket. He accepted & contributes half the cost of my season ticket.
Had Pools not given me the offer of the companion ticket Mr Lightning Tree and myself would both have still bought season tickets just as we have done many times in the past.

On topic,I enjoyed an afternoon round the tall ships with the missus n kids Sunday & over the whole weekend I dont see any great problems caused by the event.Minor bit of traffic inconvenience but nowt to shout about.

To go off topic again tony... I have no problem with that, I'd do the same to a close mate in your position, and fair to mr tree for bagging a ticket at that price, if only everyone could.

I only mentioned it as he seems to bring up my attendence, or lack of it at pools more so than anyone else, loads have people have mentioned on numerous occasions that they dont go but for some reason i'm his target stpid

2 points...

1. if i could get a season ticket for the same price as him, trust me i would.

2. I dont go as i spend the time with my daughter and son, daughter who i dont see during the week.

That is all.

Feel free to mock mr tree.

That sounds very much like Mutley. I saw him the same day, their lasses mother lives in one of those flats and he was pretty pissed and was also wearing his pools shirt :)

 Mr Mutley was that you on the balcony giving it large with classic songs, can of carling held aloft in hand?

Unlikely, unless it was a can of John Smiths.

For the sake of balance, you seem to have an unnecessary dig at people with cheap/free tickets more than anyone else. So maybe you make yourself a target?

I love a cheap ticket as much as the next man big john.

Can I just say back in the day when he didnt have commitments Pubey was ever present at pools and a lot of away matches, I know because I was with him. Things happen in life and I know he would be there like a shot if he could afford it or the time, I know he could do a lot more with his nippers with the £18 than two hours watching a game. Same as chip who nearly went to every game last season but due to G-Town closing didnt even go last night.

Every time I go home its always when we play at the Vic so I can go. Having a pop at people that would give their right arm to watch pools but are gutted becasue they have to tighten their belts or like me live about 3 hours from home isnt cricket.

It's only once a fortnight, you make it sound like it's something we have to do every morning.
£18 a fortnight if ur working I don't think is a great deal.
If you really want to go you'd find the time and the money.

I am not speaking for Pubey here but myself, its not £18 for me to go to Pools. I would have to travel 360miles (£25-30), go for a few drinks with mate on match day (£20) and forfit sometimes working on a weekend (£30).

Total and a reserved one £75. I know this isnt a lot every month which is how often I go home but its also a full weekend. I am going to go to a lot more away matches this season being down south following getting back from my holidays.

True. If Pools are the most important thing in your life you'll be there every game no matter what other family or work commitments that you might have to forego.

Trouble is for some people they have to take more than just 1 person to the game, most people want a beer or two before or after the game, a programme, a pie, etc etc soon mounts up.

I would be over the moon if I saw change out of £50 from a match day without a season ticket, and that is just a home game. I didn't go last night because I decided that I would rather spend that money on Saturday for the league match. I have bills to pay and a holiday to go on next week, and we are now playing an extra home game that I will attend before the end of the month, so that will be over £150 from my household spent on footy in August.

September has 3 games plus I quite fancy MK dons away, October and November are cheaper but I can still see how if people are struggling or are worried about their jobs in any way that by not going to pools for a few months they could save a grand or more by just after christmas.

I am sure Pubey could think of a lot better things to do with £36 a month taking his kids to the baths, days out etc.

I personally would be at pools every home match if lived in the town, but thats because as you mention I have a full time job with nothing to pay for other than rent, as dont have a kid, wife, morgage etc

its not just £18 a fortnight tho is it if you have kids who want to go or you have to shell out for transport to get to the ground ?

with the 3 cups as well as league games , its not uncommon for us to have 4 home games a month.

in august when the kids are off school and wanting new school uniform and you got holidays to pay for, its very hard for the low paid to go every game.

me and our holli will be going to the league games but cup games and away games are simply beyond my budget at the moment.

I was agreeing with you it was Victor Meldrew that was saying "if people wanted to go they could find money and time", it must be nice to live like that and have the money
