Blast from the past

Renamed in memory of John Hawksworth, a stalwart member who passed this day 2nd August 2020. RIP Mr Monkeybutt.

Sadly we must add the name of Kevin Minton, Aka Mr Ripper who passed 30/6/22. Kev was also Mr politically incorrect but a nicer lad you could never meet.

As kids having a bath in Tin Bath in the Skullery (lovely word).

I was 3rd of 4 children and the water was both coldish and "dirty" as we all used the same water. Pity my young sister who was last in.

Apparently the last Ice Age ended because Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble were driving around too much in the Cavemen Cadillacs.

Me and my brother aged 8 and 7 decided to buy our first Airfix kit…Hawker Hurricane…the glue was a nightmare and we had trouble cutting the flash off the plastic so my dad gave me a brand new Gillette razor blade in it’s little envelope and said go careful or you’ll die  …..never cut ourselves once.

Pools super fit after training on the beach and running up and down the sand dunes. Now that's proper fitness instead of walking or jogging on a nice easy surface. Why we have never done this since is quite amazing given we are one of only a few towns with beaches. sctatchinghead Maradona & Messi are just two examples of World class players who started playing and training on the beach and massively improved ball skills and fitness.

Quite agree Leggie. Vast expanse of sand to kill for and then there is Crimmer. One pre season I saw Keith Houchen leading Pools players on a run from near Steetleys over to Crimdon and back. A good old NW wind blowing would sort the men out from the boys. A hot drink afterwards. We might see a different Pools. Or they could go back to rolling in the snow like back in the 50s. Oh, we don't have snow like that any more. Being away from the area for 24 years can anyone tell me if any of the players ever go into the Corner Flag after a game anymore?

If I was the manager and the team lost through lack of effort or giving away silly goals I would make the players do one extra training session that week running up and down sand dunes. If I was a player I would definitely hate that and work like hell in every game to avoid that. I am sure it would improve results instantly.
