Lol, remind me of Lisa's first words in the Simpsons.

"David hasselhoff"

or the babies first words in 'anchorman', "Ron Burgundy"

No, you ignored him because he wasn't cool, as he remained throughout the 70, 80's and 90's.

All of a sudden, he's about to pop his clogs, records an album with whoever-that-producer-is-that-resurrects-peoples-careers-for-a-living, and he's a fookin' genius because his voice quivers...haway man.

He had a dreadful voice anyway, just imagine all the fawning over Des O' Connor when he throws a six

A young cowboy named Billy Joe grew restless on the farm
A boy filled with wanderlust who really meant no harm
He changed his clothes and shined his boots
And combed his dark hair down
And his mother cried as he walked out

Don't take your guns to town son
Leave your guns at home Bill
Don't take your guns to town

He laughed and kissed his mom
And said your Billy Joe's a man
I can shoot as quick and straight as anybody can
But I wouldn't shoot without a cause
I'd gun nobody down
But she cried again as he rode away

Don't take your guns to town son
Leave your guns at home Bill
Don't take your guns to town

He sang a song as on he rode
His guns hung at his hips
He rode into a cattle town
A smile upon his lips
He stopped and walked into a bar
And laid his money down
But his mother's words echoed again

Don't take your guns to town son
Leave your guns at home Bill
Don't take your guns to town

He drank his first strong liquor then to calm his shaking hand
And tried to tell himself he had become a man
A dusty cowpoke at his side began to laugh him down
And he heard again his mothers words

Don't take your guns to town son
Leave your guns at home Bill
Don't take your guns to town

Filled with rAge then
Billy Joe reached for his gun to draw
But the stranger drew his gun and fired
Before he even saw
As Billy Joe fell to the floor
The crowd all gathered 'round
And wondered at his final words

Don't take your guns to town son
Leave your guns at home Bill
Don't take your guns to town

I've never really been into buying singles. But I certainly had the 'San Quentin' & 'Folsom Prison' Albums.

Mine is Baby You're My Light by Richard Hawley as it was meant to be my wedding song before i split up with my ex, weeks before the event. Unlistenable now.

Quote:
As you may be able to gather, the "return" of Johnny Cash is one of my pet hates.
Incidentally, he features a few times in the Elvis Costello story, as Nick Lowe was married to his Daughter.

I had the same argument with a bunch of friends. If he was so good, why did not of them buy anything until after he was trendy. Very Paint a Vulgar Picture indeed! (in particular the sycophantic slags bit)

At the record company meeting
On their hands - a dead star
And oh, the plans they weave
And oh, the sickening greed

At the record company party
On their hands - a dead star
The sycophantic slags all say :
"I knew him first, and I knew him well"

Re-issue ! Re-package ! Re-package !
Re-evaluate the songs
Double-pack with a photograph
Extra Track (and a tacky badge)

A-list, playlist
"Please them , please them !"
"Please them !"
(sadly, THIS was your life)

But you could have said no
If you'd wanted to
You could have said no
If you'd wanted to

BPI, MTV, BBC
"Please them ! Please them !"
(sadly this was your life)

But you could have said no
If you'd wanted to
You could have walked away
...Couldn't you ?

I touched you at the soundcheck
You had no real way of knowing
In my heart I begged "Take me with you ...
I don't care where you're going..."

But to you I was faceless
I was fawning, I was boring
Just a child from those ugly new houses
Who could never begin to know

Who could never really know
Oh ...

Best of ! Most of !
Satiate the need
Slip them into different sleeves !
Buy both, and feel deceived

Climber - new entry, re-entry
World tour ! ("media whore")
"Please the Press in Belgium !"
(THIS was your life...)

And when it fails to recoup ?
Well, maybe :
You just haven't earned it yet, baby

I walked a pace behind you at the soundcheck
You're just the same as I am
What makes most people feel happy
Leads us headlong into harm

So, in my bedroom in those 'ugly new houses'
I danced my legs down to the knees
But me and my 'true love'
Will never meet again ...

At the record company meeting
On their hands - at last ! - a dead star !
But they can never taint you in my eyes
No, they can never touch you now

No, they cannot hurt you, my darling
They cannot touch you now
But me and my 'true love'
Will never meet again

The devil went down to Scunthorpe, looking for a soul to steal
In a bind an' way behind he was willin' to make a deal.
When he came across this young man pickin' on a guitar, playing it hot
an' the devil jumped on a hickory stump an' said 'I'll tell you what'
I guess you didn't know it, I'm a guitar player too,
and if you care to take a dare I'll make a bet with you.
Now you play a real good guitar boy, but give the devil his due,
I'll bet a guitar of gold to get your soul 'cause i think i'm better
than you.

The boy said my name's Johnny, it might be a sin, i'll take your bet
You're gonna regret, I'm the best I've ever been.
Johnny risen up your pick an' play your guitar hard
'cause hell's broke loose in Scunthorpe an' the devil deals the cards.
Now if you win you'll get this shinny guitar made of gold,
but if you loose the devil gets your soul!

GUITAR BIT

The devil opened up his case and said 'i'll start this gig'
and fire flew from his finger tips as he risened up his pick.
He strummed the pick across the strings it made an evil hiss
Then a band of demons joined in and it sounded somthing like this

GUITAR BIT

When the devil finished Johnny said 'You're pretty good ol' son,
but sit down in that chair right there let me show you how it's done!'

CHORUS:

Fire on the mountain run boy's run!
Devil's in the house of the risen sun!
Chicken in the bread pan picken out dough!
Ready says you don't fight, no child, no!
Let's go!

GUITAR BIT

The devil bowed his head because he knew that he'd been beat,
and he laid that golden guitar on the ground at Johnny's feet.
Johnny said 'devil come on back if you ever want to try again,
and I told you once you son of a bitch i'm the best I've ever been!'

CHORUS...(guitar bit)

I'm not calling anyone slags by the way. Just realised how my post could be misconstrued. I like some Cash songs but his record company must be rubbing their hands now that he's "trendy"

We Had It All - Green On Red.

I liked Boy Named Sue, just for the sheer violence in the content, much the same as I like Tom & Jerry.

The biopic was good as well, but just for the story, not necessarily the music.

Lots of traditional folk songs do it for me...their lovely melancholy tunes as much as the words. For instance 'Polly on the Shore'.

And my daughter playing 'Clair de Lune'

Can't help liking some of the old Kenny Rodgers stuff. Bit of a story line and that. For example...........

A few years ago I was sat out in the night, about 2 or 3 am, with some deep south 'good 'ol boys' who were in the same holiday location as us. This was in Jamaica. one of them had a guitar and they did country & western music for a few hours. There was only half a dozen of us there and they did this song. I count this night amongst the top ten of my existence. Nothing flash, just a few beers and a bloke who could play a guitar.

Everyone considered him the coward of the county.
Hed never stood one single time to prove the county wrong.
His mama named him tommy, the folks just called him yellow,
But something always told me they were reading tommy wrong.

He was only ten years old when his daddy died in prison.
I looked after tommy cause he was my brothers son.
I still recall the final words my brother said to tommy:
Son, my life is over, but yours is just begun.

Promise me, son, not to do the things I've done.
Walk away from trouble if you can.
It wont mean you're weak if you turn the other cheek.
I hope youre old enough to understand:
Son, you don't have to fight to be a man.

There's someone for everyone and tommy's love was becky.
In her arms he didn't have to prove he was a man.
One day while he was workin the gatlin boys came calling.
They took turns at becky.... there was three of them!

Tommy opened up the door and saw his becky crying
The torn dress, the shattered look was more than he could stand.
He reached above the fireplace and took down his daddy's picture.
As his tears fell on his daddy's face, he heard these words again:

Promise me, son, not to do the things I've done.
Walk away from trouble if you can.
It wont mean you're weak if you turn the other cheek.
I hope you're old enough to understand:
Son, you don't have to fight to be a man.

The gatlin boys just laughed at him when he walked into the bar room.
One of them got up and met him halfway cross the floor.
When tommy turned around they said, hey look! ol yellows leavin.
But you coulda heard a pin drop when tommy stopped and blocked the door.

Twenty years of crawlin was bottled up inside him.
He wasnt holdin nothin back; he let em have it all.
When tommy left the barroom not a gatlin boy was standing.
He said, this ones for becky, as he watched the last one fall.
And I heard him say,

I promised you, dad, not to do the things you done.
I walk away from trouble when I can.
Now please don't think Im weak, I didn't turn the other cheek,
And papa, I sure hope you understand:
Sometimes you gotta fight when youre a man

Well Kenny is VERY topical at the moment. If you don't know why I'll leave you to find out but here's a clue:

You gotta know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away, know when to run
You never count your money while you're sitting at the table
There'll be time enough to count it when the dealing's done

Kenny Rodgers is a genius, as indeed is Glenn Campbell.

Anyone ever heard REM's version of Witchita Lineman?? Doesn't make me want to cry like but it does make me want to sing at the top of me voice, which is a horrible noise.....

Lots of traditional folk songs do it for me...their lovely melancholy tunes as much as the words. For instance 'Polly on the Shore'.

And my daughter playing 'Clair de Lune'

:sweeeet: you're a class act Grabey baby

Thank you gentlemen
Been snowed under recently with work and NLP training stuff, that and trying to sort out setting myself up as self employed.
Add to this the fact that my jeep broke down at 90mph on the way to the AZ Alkmar game and still isnt fixed - over three months later, meaning I've missed every fucking match as havent had a car since. Not going to the matches has added to not going on here as havent had anything to comment on re: matches. Have been reading at times though, just not as much.
I love the Tindersticks Mr Head - though I know you jest.
My favourite band ever were The Smiths so I like a bit of misery.
Hopefully I'll be driving soon and back at matches, along with more time on here.

Can't help liking some of the old Kenny Rodgers stuff. Bit of a story line and that.

Unless you're on about Gordon Brown thats gone over my head sctatchinghead

The saddest song I have ever listened to is 'Down from Dover', a duet by Lee Hazelwood and Nancy Sinatra. Basically about a stillbirth, which is as sad as you can get. I last listened to it about six months ago, and I don't think I will ever listen to it again in my life. Beautiful, but absolutely gut-wrenching.

Also 'Arkansas Gold' by the same artists, about a girl whose father dies in a mining accident.

What probably magnifies the sadness is the backing music, which on its own sounds upbeat and uplifting.

WTF is it about Johnny Cash then?

Did you all buy "A Thing Called Love", "One Piece At A Time" or "The Man In Black" in 1972?

No, you ignored him because he wasn't cool, as he remained throughout the 70, 80's and 90's.

All of a sudden, he's about to pop his clogs, records an album with whoever-that-producer-is-that-resurrects-peoples-careers-for-a-living, and he's a fookin' genius because his voice quivers...haway man.

I was brought up listening to Country etc thanks to my mam & dad!!!! :sweeeet:

But I know exactly what you mean!!!!

About 5 years ago I took some Frankie Laine and Johnny Cash CD's to play at work and some workmates were complaining!!!!
The main whinger is now Johnny Cash's 'biggest fan'....well since he saw the film he is!!!!
Needless to say I reminded him about when he whinged!!!!
Feckin Tossers!!!!

The same goes for Iggy Pop aswell....no one had heard of him until 'Trainspotting'....then everyone was his biggest fan!!!!

And Ian Dury....when he died he was a genius and one the best songwriters ever....pity they never thought all that when he was alive!!!!

'Ere ere ere!!!!!

I won't be having that, your dogship. I was in the mosh pit at Reading in 1990 when the Igster was strutting around in his gruds snarling out 'Search and Destroy.'

He shook my hand 'cos I was holding the mad crowd ((c)MJ) off a young lass by bracing my arms against the crush barriers either side of her. Needless to say the minute I took one hand off to shake with him I collapsed on top of her and crushed the breath out of her young lungs.........

And no I didn't before you ask but believe me it wasn't for the lack of trying.

I was at that very gig mr Kev, though I was too stoned to be in the mosh-pit.
It was a great Reading if I remember right (and it might be that I dont - where the Pixies at at that one?) but the old master taught the young bands how to do it.

Fun House was on my turntable in 1970 thanks to an older collegue at work along with Beefheart/Steve Miller/Johnny Winter/Blue Cheer/Canonball Adderley amongst others. I have stuck with all but Blue Cheer to this day. For my part I introduced him to Moondog [;)]

Johnny Cash prison albums immense - but the American albums are all top drawer and there's absolutely nowt wrong with comin' to an artist late. Musical snobbery does no one no good.

Feel Like Goin' Home by Charlie Rich is the best song ever and by my reckoning that's country (and what a voice that man has).

I'm away to listen to Tago Mago bbolt
