The latest issue of Retail Week has a 'Top 100 biggest' shopping centres article, and it's got the town/city and what county it's in - Plymouth, Devon - Walsall, West Midlands etc. In at number 50-odd is 'Hartlepool, County Durham'. Brought a smile to my face.

And who'd have thought that Middleton Grange shopping centre was 50 oddth biggest in Britain?

Hartlepool isn't in any county.
The Lord Lieutenant of Durham represents the town for ceremonial purposes but other than that?

When I have to fill in a form or somethin that requires a county I put Hartlepool.
Just like New York - So good they named it twice
However I am of that age where I was born in Hartlepool, County Durham and spent the first 30 years of my life as a Durham Lad and still regard myself as such.

Durham County still exists as a county and even before 1974 when Hartlepool and even West Hartlepool were County Boroughs, the address was County Durham. We are back in exactly the same situation as pre 1974, where we run our own affars but for historical and ceremonial purposes we are in County Durham...just like Darlington and Stockton are.
Don't confuse the county of Durham with Durham County Council which is merely the admiistration for part of the county. IS THAT CLEAR??? sctatchinghead

It might be to do with the concentration of shoe shops.

Seriously though, it's based on square footage of shops. Metro Centre is number one.

Yesterday's Guardian had "Hartlepool, County Durham" below the photo of the school bus crash.

Maybe someone just hasn't told us that the town's back in county Durham?

NO!!!
Pre 1974 Hartlepool was still for some things still answerable to the County.
NOT NOW.

Middleton Grange is the third biggest shopping centre in the North-East after MetroCentre and Eldon Square, fact!

True.

But it is our only one.

Other places, eg. Diddlesbrough, have several all next to each other.

Back in the mid eighties I brought my then girlfriend up to Hartlepool for a weeks leave. She went back convinced that the town was inhabited by centipedes with a penchant for shite shoes.

I think you'll find it's YES...pre1974 we had the County Borough of Hartlepool not answerable to the county..pre 1967 we had the Borough of Hartlepool (basically the Headland and West View) partly run by the borough council and partly by Durham County Council.. the rest was the County Borough of West Hartlepool that was answerable only to itself... if you wanna bet on it I'll be happy to oblige

Yeah, but 'she' (like we're buying that....) was probably looking for PVC underwear outfits, poppers, 'health clubs' and clubs playing Euro Disco.

Now if you'd took 'her' to Boro.......

In 1971 my job in the Highways Department of Hartlepool Council was rumoured to be moving over to a new Cleveland County Council, from Burn Road to somewhere in Middlesbrough. So in my infinite wisdom, I thought I don't want to work in the Boro, so I joined the RAF instead sctatchinghead

But getting back to the thread, even after this change to Cleveland, all my letters home were always addressed to County Durham, for the next 6 years. I suppose it was the bl**dy TS postcode that made sure they all arrived OK. bbolt
