Nicked from somewhere else.
Growing up it seemed that nearly everyone had a nickname. What was yours and your mates/people you knew....

Johnny Giro...named because he use to hang about outside houses on Giro Day when Giros were posted and claim it was his Giro and the Postman handed the Giro to him.
Puffer Boots...Got his name in the 70's because he always wore Boots ala Slade and people thought he was Gay.
Rocky Socks...never changed his socks.
Mike...Billy had 'big hair' and one day when he was buring copper wire he was covered from head to foot in soot from the fire and he looked like a microphone.
Updee...one of my brothers use to call me 'Up dil doodle bug' when I was a kid...it got shortened to Updee when I was about 12 and some people still call me Updee.
Johnny Giro had another nickname...Klepto...as in Kleptomaniac.

Snotty/Greensleeves....always had a snotty nose and use to wipe it on his sleeve.

One of me Mam's friends was nicknamed Bag over the Head Maureen...she was quite ugly. Lovely woman though and I doubt she knew about the nickname.

Worked with a lad whose nickname was The Muppet, I think he was aware of it but no one ever called him that to his face.
Not an individual name but Heerema on the docks was called the Maggot Farm, the workers were called maggots.

are nicknames a thing of the past. you do not seem to hear them anymore and my lad who is 37 has never had a nickname for school or workmates. once if you did not have one you were invisable.

People here all have nicknames as soon as they are born, they never call each other by their christian name the one which is on their Birth Certificate. My partners son has 2 friends, one called Ozone the other IPhone, her relations have Moo Moo and Rat as nicknames.

I was once told a story about a bloke in Liverpool who was losing his hair, and used black shoe polish to hide this. Apparently the poor bugger died due to it as there was something poisonous in the polish that soaked through his skull over a period of time.

His nickname at work was "Cherry Blossom".

I was also told about a bloke at Steetley who had the nickname "Chicken" - so naturally when he got his son an apprenticeship there, the young-un became "The Egg".
