Top of League Two and looking nailed on for an automatic promotion place. Mols is their main man - in amongst the goals and assists practically every week. Jamie Sterry also one of their top performers.

Wonder what it's like supporting a proper football team. :(

It's not that long since Donny were in the NL and Pools were comfortable and chasing promotion in L2. I believe that Donny's chairman once set their ground on fire. That's football, it goes around and around - pointless post.

That was at Belle Vue, their old ground, think it was the season they got relegated circa '98.
I remember being at the away day that season Pools were 2 down against a bunch of kids. Their fans staged a walkout protest during the last 20 minutes, and we scored twice and should have had a winner at the death, but Jon Cullen failed to make contact on the ball - Think their then Chairman, Ken 'The Firestarter, Twisted Firestarter' Richardson ended up in the Big House for that.

Good to see you taking the long view - it's 20-odd years since Donny were in the NL.

I was at the match today and enjoyed it, but I've been a supporter long enough to say I'd have enjoyed it a lot more if Pools hadn't chucked away our last promotion and I was still watching players of the calibre of Molyneux and Sterry.

Pools won't be a proper team again till Raj and his merry band of fuckwits are gone.

all lower division teams have there good and bad times. we have had both like them but it woul not be out of this world to say we could swap places with them and others in the next 20 years. nothing seem to last forever in football.

.The only part that narks me is players who go all wobbly and stop trying, whose form goes through the floor, who look uninterested, next thing they’re away…and hey fucking presto, back to normal.
If players want to be away, get rid, but I expect them to put a full shift in while they’re being paid for the fan’s sake alone.

Long before poor health condemned me to listen to Pools on DAB radio.

Back when the only DAB on offer was Dalton, Allon and Baker.

Would say the Danny Wilson Promotion team was decent too- he is my favourite manager, in my time, closely followed by Neale Cooper and then DC.

Neither. Would you care to answer my question, giving dates of title wins, promotions, cup runs beyond 4th round and Wembley appearances, thanks in advance.

We were a matter of minutes from making the Championship, we would have had 2 Wembley trips but for Wembley not being available, not too many lower league clubs get past the 4th round - a lot depends on the draw, semi final of the EFL Trophy.
More bad times than good but there's definitely memories of much much better times - Cardiff, Ashton Gate, Crystal Palace, away days that were special. And I'm sure that the likes of Darlo, Scunthorpe, Torquay, etc fans would swap places with us in a heartbeat.

a lot depends on how far back you go. darlo have gained promotions and have played at wembley and scunthorpe had a thing we can only dream of. a number of seasons in the old second division. even bloody accrington and morecambe have played in league 1 since we were there and lets not talk about crawley or fleetwood.

Only have to go back a few years to Ashton Gate, Crystal Palace - our joint best ever run in the fa cup, Semi- final of the efl trophy though.
For all Scunthorpe might have made the Championship level look where they are now.
Must admit one of my lifelong ambitions is to see us play at Wembley, thwarted twice by circumstance and can only imagine what a win at the hallowed ground and after party would be like.

I was there also.
They had a forward called Prince Moncrief, who,if memory serves me right scored both Donny goals & were sponsored by East Riding Sacks, which I thought was funny.
One game they never had a keeper,so the Chairman’s next door neighbour played in goal

We left early about 15 minutes from the end to beat the traffic.
Pre mobile phone days.

Goin up the A1 put the 5:05pm results on radio 5
James Alexander Gordon Read the results out.

And cudent believe we drew 2 2

Sure Pools had a decent side early 70s that kept around 8 clean sheets on the bounce, Watling the keeper?

Nope, like many Pools sides though, probably had a 10 or 15 game spell when they hit a bit of form, maybe some consecutive clean sheets in there, I remember Watling saving 5 or 6 consecutive penalties during this period, but all in all it was same old same old struggle. There was the first great escape of 71/72 under Ashurst, followed by the 73/74 team built by Ashurst, and carried on into the 74/75 and under Ken Hale, who were as hard as nails, and difficult to beat, and had Ashurst not buggered off to Gillingham in the summer of 74 might have been involved in a promotion fight in 74/75 but never materialised under Hale, though we did have a run in the League Cup that season when we got to the 4th round after numerous replay wins, defeating Bournemouth and Blackburn on the way to getting knocked out by Aston Villa.

That was about it though, hope yet again extinguished by reality, by October 1975, we were hours away from going bankrupt, then along came Vince Barker to save the day, before more rinse and repeat.

I'm sure Watling broke records for minutes without conceding a goal back in the day. Remember him being featured on the BBC Saturday football focus or whatever it was called back then.

Hartlepool United- Twooooooooooo

Used to love listening to JAG read out the full times, in his own inimitable style, man was a legend. clappp

Just not the same nowadays- in fact they can't be be arsed full stop once they've read the Premier Shit out. You just knew once he retired and was replaced by a woman that it's days were numbered- nothing is sacred anymore! :angry-screaming:

leaving belle vue to beat the traffic. thats a good one back in those days. there would be more traffic when the bingo came out earlier in the day. best memory of donny rovers was going to a night match in that era sitting at the back of the main stand. at half time i was looking for the bogs. went straight into a room i thought was a tea bar for fans only to find out it was for the directors. no problem as i was offered free tea and sandwiches on entering and had a piss with those i should be doffing my cap at. shows what you can do if you are smartly dressed and have confidence or no prior knowledge.
