I can remember in the 80s Chelsea had a guy called Ian Hutchison I think who had a very long throw after which his arms would spin like a windmill. One team I can not remember who countered this by putting a man directly in front of him on the pitch and it cut out the effectiveness of it.

Rory Delap was the man - Stoke scored a ridiculous number of goals in the Prem from his long throws.

It’s only recently Pools don’t put someone on the pitch close to the long thrower,
Is this now against the rules.

At one time a player used to stand directly in front of the player but that was stopped I think.

need to be three yards/metres away from the thrower. hate the tactic must more about the time wasted to take them that the throw itself.

I remember it being well publicised during a Bournemouth cup run years ago when one of their players was jumping up and down in front of players taking throw ins.

cannot do that either and you need to stand still till the throw is taken, years back in the good old days a player would just have nobbled him early on to stop the tactic being used.

Just remembered Ollie Norris of Bournemouth was the player who hit the headlines for stopping throw ins in a famous cup upset.

a law that was put into force quite a few number of years back. does not mean you cannot get close to the thrower as its another piss boiler at games where the player who takes the throw is always left free to recieve the ball back from a player he throws it to.
