Named after the train, but also a missile tested at Spadeadam near Gilsland off the A69 ….nearest civilised place is Carlisle…(there’s an oxymoron).
I know it well, and still in use .

Flying Scotsman for me I witnessed it on 4 different occasions going south past Hartlepool and returning on the two journeys. What a magnificent train to see as a small child.

When we were kids the trains went past her back garden and we’d try to count the coal wagons…we all got different numbers and a fight usually followed.

Use to always be 43. We counted them as kids aswell growing up in Old Town. Our bedroom window was about 20 yards from the railway line.

I think the current Biomass trains have 23. Or is it 22 or 24?
Opinions are divided.

seen it the couple of times its been on the jeighley and worth valley but never in regular service back in the day. got sick of seeing the A4 class though when they were downgraded to run from newcastle to liverpool after the east coast main line. at least they pulled some of the ex LNER stock though.
