They do paint the town in a patronising bad light…..despite what they say there was plenty of jobs if you wanted one…..great decade the 70’s

Nobody is saying there's no jobs - just temporary cutbacks because of the 3 day week. There's a lot of talk about new jobs that have been brought in by the North Sea oil boom.

The plummy-voiced reporter is redolent of the times though - and the shopkeeper worried because his takings are down £10 in a week! That's less than a shoplifter would stuff in one pocket these days.

He refers to us in the opening credits as ‘a cheerless Northern town dogged by unemployment and deprivation…implying there’s a shortage of jobs.

the 3 day week was good for some as it gave em a fighting chance to get a full week in.

Doing apprenticeship and while all the lads were laid off we had to be kept on, so the engineer had to find daft jobs for us to do…two of the lads were given the job of dumping metal castings 4 ft long, weighed a bit, on the tip half a mile away and given a four wheel cart to tow them there on the site roads, they weren’t too happy on the first day then cheered up…. turned out they got so far and saw this big pond, so dumped them in the water, sat in the sun for an hour and returned with their empty cart….sadly for them, when the site resumed normal working the drainage pumps were turned back on and the level in the pool dropped to virtually nothing, revealing it’s ‘treasure’…a severe bollocking followed by having to get them out by hand and doing the job properly….and it rained.
