He was Arthur Pickering's rival as the Pools correspondent for BBC radio Cleveland/Tees for a long time. Those were the days when live commentaries weren't allowed and he phoned into the studio when goals were scored.

Those crackly phone lines often sounded like he was on the other side of the world rather than places like Rochdale or Tranmere.

True very crackly lines back then in the 80s 90s but wait that cannot be true ...Neil Armstrong got a live phone call from the President of the USA it was so so clear no crackly sounds and was only 250,000 miles away
