I watched the game. Nigeria were far the better side. They man marked James and she couldn't handle the very aggressive close attention and her frustration got the better of her.
I agree a substantial ban should be imposed.
England were very lucky, with Nigeria hitting the bar on three occasions.
It doesn't harm to ride your luck and did they do that but they're through and they will take that.

To me proof she does not have the right temperament and will not be picked for England again. No matter how good she is she can not go doing these sort of things when frustrated if it had been against better opposition we would have been in trouble. The first thing she should be made to do is apologise to the other player and to her team mates and during any interviews she does.

Mr Derwent, I am forced to reprimand you for your blatant sexist use of the word ‘man marking’….. well done.

It will be a 3 game ban, which effectively is the end of her tournament even if England get to the final.

All in all it was quite a physical contest - some strong tackles, clashes of heads, a boot to the head from an attempted overhead kick... You sometimes get a few tears from the lasses before they get up and get on with it, but there's a lot less rolling around in pretend agony

Aye, I did consider for a split second then stuck to what is right. It did sound ridiculous when the commentator said after the sending that England were now a woman down. It just doesn't sound right to me.
I've often wondered when we will lose the Isle of Man and be told its the Isle of Person.

Judging by the incident on the pitch ,and the look on her face after she had left the field .. i wouldn't want to be the one to break the news to her..

It's the last game i watch anyway...i'm not putting up with this sort of behaviour.. :)

The BBC will absolutely devastated. She was their favourite player and were hyping her to high heavens.

fair play to the nigerian lass who got stood on. if that had been a mens international or a premier league game the player would have rolled around as many times as they thought necessary and holding their face in the bargain.

One for the 'football is a man's game' diehards:

"According to the Daily Mail, Kelly's penalty (against Nigeria) was clocked at a mind-blowing 111km/h - which was actually faster than any Premier League goal last season.

It beat last season's Premier League top speed set by West Ham's Said Benrahma, whose fastest strike registered at 107.2km per-hour."

England v Colombia will be a canny warm up tomorrow morning before heading over to the Vic.

Women consistently hit the ball harder, run faster and head the ball better than men. Thats right isn't it?

Was watching the rugby highlights last week and see that the Welsh have now ditched the English name for their national anthem ("Land of My Fathers") and now use the Welsh name "Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau". I wonder how long before that has to be changed as the Mothers complain that Wales was not only created by men.

Funny how the Scots, Welsh and Irish have this massive chip on their shoulder to things English….especially as the English form 90% of the population of these isles.
I never actually understood it, are the English more laid back and less insecure than our Celtic cousins?
For years I liked to see the other home nations do well in competitions when it dawns on you they don’t want your support and favour other teams when the roles are reversed….. now I just watch it as a total neutral, not a nationalistic juvenile like them, but then I leave that sort of petty behaviour in their capable hands.

Snowy -

As I see it - the Scotch, Boyo's and Paddies are very Balanced when it comes to sporting rivalry as they all have a chip on BOTH shoulders! :violin:

I too, used to want them to do well against other nations- though NOT anymore, given the bile, vitriol and shear pleasure they take by almost creaming themselves whenever we come up short, in any sport.

I'm slightly younger (more juvenile) than you Snowy - so I say Fuck'em!

I put them on the same billing as the Aussie's- only without the talent to be majorly annoying!

Sadly, I’m afraid that’s my attitude too now, in fact I get a warm glow from it

I saw a programme the other night where they were interviewing people in the street in Dublin and asked them to name a country they hated. (why ask a question like that ?)
Apart from one, they all said England apart from one lad who did indeed ask why they were going round asking such unhelpful questions…. sctatchinghead

Having lived and worked in all the U.K. countries I understand why there is a dislike of the English, not hatred, the biggest reason is the media. When England are playing in no matter what sport/tournament it’s constantly in your face more so on the BBC, it’s some times the opening headlines on the BBC national news.
They should ask the question who the English dislike, I think Germans followed closely by the French, I think there is more hatred by the English towards those two countries than the Scots, Welsh and Irish is towards the English.
For me there is good and bad everywhere, I don’t dislike any people no matter where they come from, it’s the arrogance and religious beliefs of some of them I dislike.

Somehow I don’t see their ‘hatred’ being based on BBC football coverage.
There are far bigger reasons in their history than mere football.
As for me, I can’t say I actually hate anyone particularly the Germans as Inalways enjoyed my time there.

think you could be wrong about the bbc coverage getting up the backs of the other 3 uk nations. in the question about womens football most agree its their over hyped coverage before the lasses kicked a ball that put them off so you can understand their take on the england mens game when thats mentioned. actually do not know enough people of any country to form a basis to dislike that country or its sports teams.

I don’t think the majority of the other nations hate the English, some might, it’s more a dislike. At the football the fans some times sing if you hate who ever clap your hands, I don’t think they actually mean hate ?

I dare say it does pee them off but in the context of history it’s a minor passing event…there are much bigger grievances in our Celtic cousins history…. The trouble is they do like to hang on to their grievances like comfort blankets.

Seems to be the same when trying to follow the fortunes of Stenhousemuir in the Scotch league.

its like this so called hate crime. its not hate in the old sense of the word but like in football its a dislike for certain clubs and international teams for various reasons. other than pools there are teams i dislike, could not give a toss about and some i have a soft spot for. same in the international game where portugal are the new top of my dislike list for being to me the biggest cheats and having my most disliked player in football ronaldo being part of their side. just cannot stard play acting arrogant gits in life never mind sportsmen however good they are.

But as Snowy mentioned earlier, 85% of the UK Population is in England so you would expect the vast majority of the National coverage of the BBC to cater for that 85%.

After they've catered for the majority they can do a bit for the Scots (8%), a smaller amount for the Welsh (4%) and try and squeeze something in for the Northern Irish (3%).

In a 1 hour news programmes that is 51 minutes on England and the other 9 minutes split between the rest. That is probably not far away from what happens.

Btw, any mention of women's International football seems to be banned up here North of the Border at the moment

Not playing Down Under there isn't.

Only mention I heard of women's football all day Saturday when out in the car was that the SWPL (or whatever the women's club game is called up here) was starting on Sunday. I didn't even know the Lilletts had won until I turned on Sky Sports later in the evening

3 great goals - 2 from England, 1 from Australia. The best team won.

Well done to the Lionesses - a great display and a well deserved victory over the convicts! clappp

Was going to say that those Aussies don't like it up 'em! Though looking at the clip of their team, most of them do appear to be very wary of the one- eyed trouser snake! bbolt

Putting the mens team to shame. European Champions & Sunday World Champions. Hempy superb player got the lot. I put a £10 double on England women to win World Cup & Pools to win Vanarama... Close to getting one home.

Yeah I know because the women's competitions are equally as hard to win as the men's.

8 different teams have won men's world cup.

Women's world cup started 60 years later and with this year will be 5 different winners so at least it is more competitive

Sorry, cant follow your logic.USA have won it four times out of 8, Germany twice, Norway and Japan. Fewer teams in it over time and of them quite a few are part timers and also rans involved in the womens tournament.

Hardly, it’s essentially a different game. Different market place.
