An in depth profile of Raj Singh is coming up soon on Sky Sports as part of a new series called My Story.

Among other things, he discusses why players with British South Asian backgrounds are so under-represented in English professional football - currently just 115 out of 15,000 footballers across Academy and professional football. According to Raj, there's no lack of interest:

"There is a massive following among South Asians. We've all tried to get in the game initially while growing up, and if it's not playing, you try and get involved in some way.

"I've followed Middlesbrough since 1978. It was really, really tough and you had to be careful, especially when you were at away matches and making sure you weren't by yourself or isolated because you didn't know when trouble was going to kick off, and fans were going to start fighting. And being a South Asian, you were open even more to abuse.

But there have been massive leaps forward in all walks of life. The UK has come a long way in the last 25 years and everybody, including Sky Sports, is making a big push to eradicate things like that in sport, and life in general."

living over 12 years now with the same figure my average journey to bradford with its large south asian population its a subject that i know something about. there are many asian footballers as raj says but there is a big tendancy for them to all play in about 10 teams over there on a sunday morning. not saying they all do but its the vast majority. on saturday you rarely see em in parks type football but the better ones play in the bottom layers of the non league game. as he states things have changed over the last 25 years and will probebly change more in the next 25 where more integration will see more south asians playing as pro footballers. the only thing to stop it or slow it down will be the authorities trying to rush things too early. things that evolve are more likely to be long lasting than even good plans that are false.
