I'm currently reading a book on the history of West Hartlepool (Robert Wood 1967) one of my sons got me for my birthday, thought I'd share this passage with you which I thought quite entertaining:-

Around 1870 'Navvy Nan' (Fuller) earned her living in the Stranton area of town with a horse/donkey and flat cart. She was a tough and hard living virago. Distinctive in her long skirts, large coarse apron and hob nailed boots, she could hold her own with any navvy in Stranton with pick and shovel, and in other ways too, for she could quaff three pints of strong ale in five minutes.
She chewed 'black twist' and one of her donkeys ears was darker than the other as when she was ready to move off she squirted a dark stream of tobacco juice out of the side of her mouth and never missed the donkeys ear.

Got that book. A must have for anyone interested in the history of Hartlepool. I think she was a bouncer on the door of the Blacksmiths
