Just got back from watching the lads cricket team get hammered and find myself, once again, stunned by the complete cocks who ref/umpire/judge/whatever kids sport.

It was plain for everyone to see that they (the opposition) were, without doubt, going to win. We were 4 for 5 off 3 overs chasing 134 to win (20 over game) but did that make any difference to the umpires? Absolutely not.

The umpire stood at square leg or point or whatever it is (not a cricket expert by any stretch of the imagination) gave two of our lads out stumped....one of them was so bad a decision the umpire at the non-striking end ignored him and play continued. Turns out he was in some way linked to the winning team. Shock, horror.

Why? Why do people do this? It really is a waste of everyone's time. The game itself was utterly meaningless like all kids sport but you still get these absolute fucking muppets ruining game after game. It's just so sad that people take things so seriously and pass it on to their kids.

Football is rife with it as you all undoubtedly know.

The lad's team had to win or draw the last game of the season to go up and guess who ref'd the game? A manager from the team who benefitted from us losing?! As a result our opposition scored an offside goal, we had a perfecrly good goal chalked off for a reason I can't explain and we played nearly 10 minutes injury time. Fortunately, despite his constant, blatant cheating we managed a 3-3 draw and went up.

I just couldn't do it myself. Of course everyone gets involved beyond the level they should when their kids are involved but 'win at any costs'? It's just amazing.

What's the worst example of clear bias that you've witnessed? (in kids sport obviously)

We once played St Cuthberts at cricket in Junior School and I was about 25-30 Not Out when I brayed the ball back over the Bowlers head only to have the Umpire, a Mr McDougall (who was in fact ex-St Teresas to boot!) stick his hand up and "catch" me. Yup, I was given out.

You have to expect this in Schools sport, its like winning a boxing match in Italy. The Brian Glover in KES effect, all part of growing up, long may it last.

Ask any cricketer about the spirit of the game and he would say that this does not uphold it. A pointless and undeserved victory much like beating someone 10-0 at football. How to destroy a child's interest in a game in one fail swoop.

Again, while playing for St Teresas we were beating St Begas (who had 3 8-year olds and I believe a girl playing..tiny school of course) I think it was 8-0 at Half-Time so the Referee blew up after about 5 minutes of the Second Half at 11-0.

It was, apparently, to save them from embarrassment but that had already happened at Half-Time as the Bega's Goalie stormed off "To Watch Swap-Shop", in his own words!

I remember scoring for Jesy Road against St Aidans. Sadly we didnt play with nets and despite my bullet 18 yard strike going into the top bin, the referee said it went wide (He was a St Aidans teacher)

Only ever goal I scored at Primary School level an all.

Used to be a right bastard carrying the steel goalposts and crossbars from the school to Chester Field* where we played.

*Cue jokes about carrying them to Chesterfield. I think it was called Chester Field. Was a little field close to Grayfields. Used to be scattered with porno mags.

I only ever scored once for Teresa's and that was against Fens, we made the town cup final that year and played at the Vic against Cuthy's but got battered 3-0.

Its alright for you townies, us yakkers had to make our own way and back to places like Wingate, Wheatley Hill , Shotton and Thornley. You got refunded your bus fare. Usually when you claimed it the next day, you were nursing a black eye. It was role reversal when they came to Blackhall. Needless to say away wins were at a premium in those days.

I played cricket in the Langbaurgh league for a few years where you umpire your own team so works both ways, fair to say the words LBW weren't in the score book much

Not kids sport, I know, but this brought back a few memories, Shilts (and Mr TTEF).
As a lad (many moons ago), I was footie mad and my dad was a prominent member of the local cricket team. He always wanted me to play but I wasn't interested as I thought it was a bit cissy - I would soon alter my opinion. I never played at school but started out as a complete rabbit, batting at number eleven for the second XI before somehow working my way up to open for the first team.
I recall a few of the opposition umpires had sons who batted high up the order and one, in particular, always scored a lot of runs each season, largely because he enjoyed about three 'lives' every innings. Another playing against us, lost his cap while attempting a hook and it fell on his stumps, dislodging the bails but his father deemed that the wind had blown them off.
More bizarrely, we were playing a team who I had previously scored a few runs against when the ball struck me on the front pad as I was attempting to guide the ball down to fine leg. The ball pitched well outside the line of my leg stump but the umpire's finger went up before I could even look at him. After the match, he apologized for giving me out LBW saying, "Sorry, I forgot you were left-handed". He would have been better off saying nothing.
Nothing as blatant as your dismissal though, Phil!

Must of been shit to only score one goal at Primary School. Think even the *insert correct political term for uncoordinated child* used to score a few each game at my school. To be fair I did have a future pools youth player running up the pitch and setting me up an open goal to bang it in!
