Just a couple of weeks ago Spanish side Girona were on the verge of auto-promotion to the top division for the first time in their history. In their last match they needed a home win against a lowly placed club whose safety had just been clinched, while the only team that could stop them were away to the division's champions.

Girona could only draw while their rivals won, torpedoing their auto-promotion.

Never mind, there was always the play-offs. They went to Zaragoza and won 3-0 in the first leg. So things were looking promising to say the least.

So how did they get on in the second leg yesterday?

They only lost 4-1 at home. Zaragoza go through to the final on away goals.
No information yet on the suicide count of Girona supporters, the lynching of the manager and players, or the betting fraud investigation.

Someone needs to do a doctoral thesis on "Self-destructive tendencies in football teams from the north-east of European countries."

Not counting FC Barcelona, obviously. There's an exception to every rule!
