A mate was singing Walk on By yesterday at work, the Dionne Warwick version, fabulous song and remembered that The Stranglers also did a great cover.

Any more where the cover is equally good if not better than the original?

Hard rlRain by The Staples Singers is better than Dylan's.

St Etienne's version of Kiss and Make Up is better than the Fieldmice original (sorry Chip!).

St Etienne's version of Only Love Can Break Your Heart is better than Neil Young's too.

Ceremony by New Order.

The Joy Division original was the best song never recorded in my opinion (that isn't a typo!)

The original version was Chris Farlowe*, old boy, and nobody's ever got within a mile of it. Even Wagner off the X-factor could have done a better job than Rod Stewart.

*Mike d'Abo, former Manfred Mann singer, wrote it but never sang it on record.

First post on here, so expecting the customary welcome....

Tricky's version of PE's Black Steel obviously magnificent, however imho one of the greatest ever covers is Robert Wyatt's version of Costello's Shipbuilding.

I agree, the live recording was good but to have that mixed properly would have been amazing.

'GRAVELANDS' by The King.

An entire album of wonderful cover versions of songs by dead popstars performed in the style of Elvis by a binman from Northern Ireland.

It has long been amongst my favourite albums. Not because it is a good joke but because it is really good.

Radiohead's Nobody does is better is certainly different! Very much like when you sing along to something when you're alone in the car.
Travis - Hit me baby one more time.
Amy Winehouse/Mark Ronson's Valerie

Maybe Radiohead should have called theirs Somebody Does it Better.

Having said that, Carly Simon's version set the bar pretty high.

The Australian Doors - Stairway to Heaven.
They actually got a Zepp song to sound uncannily like the Doors had written it.
There's also the version by he whose name must not be pronounced that was made at the same time.

The Sex Pistols' version of The Stooges' No Fun. Both brilliant but I still like the cover a bit better than the original.

How about the 1958 classic I Fought the Law and the Law Won.
I know the Clash were a bit limited but they did manage a half-decent version of that song.
