...from 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps, died in the Musa Qala area of northern Helmand in Afghanistan on Monday.

He was from Medway and went to Rainham Mark Grammar School, which was my old secondary school. Although I went to RMGS from 2001 to 2008 and I don't know when he was there.

My old headmaster, Simon Decker, said: "We are very sad to hear this news about Capt Daniel Read.

"Our thoughts are with his family at this time."

"Clearly from the tribute issued by the Ministry of Defence Daniel served with great distinction, was very brave and saved many lives."

Prime Minister Gordon Brown said in a statement in the Commons that Capt Read had died undertaking the dangerous work of protecting his fellow soldiers and civilians from explosive devices.

Mr Brown said: "The courage and selflessness of this work is truly breathtaking.

"His sacrifice will not be forgotten, and we send our sincere condolences to his family and friends."

Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth said: "Hearing about Capt Read, I am filled with admiration for his sense of duty and courage."

My thoughts and sympathies are with his family at this painful time.

Another brave man in this endless war.

The number just keeps on climbing and will continue to. Within the next couple of weeks the death toll will surpass the Falklands total of 255. Still a long way short of what is becoming the forgotten war in Northern Ireland (763).
