Not for the hats but the cheap booze, the cheapest pint in the world. Found this list of most expensive and cheapest drinking countries on the Times website:

The most expensive...

10. Qatar
Tens of thousands of foreign nationals live in the Middle Eastern trading hub of Qatar, one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Unemployment is just 0.6 per cent and, along with Bahrain, it is one of the few countries in the world with no income tax. But there are disadvantages and chief among them is the price of an ice cold pint of lager. It will set you back £4, according to Pintprice.com.

9. Equatorial Guinea
The third smallest country in Africa with one of the largest price tags for a pint of beer, also at £4 on average.

8. Andorra
An estimated 9 million people visit Andorra (population 85,000) every year. It is famous for its tax haven status, but visitors are forced to stump up an average of £4 for a pint of beer.

7. Iceland
There are a host of reasons to visit Iceland but beer drinking is not one of them. A pint of lager will set you back an eye-watering £4.10.

6. France
The French typically charged users of Pintprice.com £4.33 for a pint - or perhaps 500ml - of lager.

5. Guadeloupe
The French archipelago in the Caribbean has a sizzling climate where temperatures can reach 31 degrees Celsius. Quenching your thirst with a cool pint will set you back £4.80

4. Greenland
There is little to do in Greenland except ride around on a ski-mobile and contemplate the consequence of global warming (the disappearance of the ice beneath your feet). You certainly can't afford to hit the pub and sink a few pints, each one costing you £5.

3. Djibouti
The remote Republic of Djibouti, between Somalia and Eritrea on the Gulf of Aden coast, has a population of just over half a million. It hosts the only US military base in sub-Sarahan Africa, but if US troops leave their barracks they will find that a pint of lager will set them back £5.95 on average.

2. Norway
Like impoverished students in towns across Britain, it is common for locals in Oslo to hold pre-evening drinks at each others houses to avoid a ruinously expensive bar tab at the end of the night. A beer in Norway costs £6.

1. United Arab Emirates
No matter which brand of lager you drink, every pint in the UAE is reassuringly - or extortionately - expensive. A pint will typically cost £7.

And the cheapest...

10 Philippines - 41p
9 Kazakhstan - 41p
8 Madagascar - 38p
7 N. Korea - 38p
6 Democratic Republic of the Congo - 38p
5 Ethiopia - 37p
4 Bhutan - 36p
3 Burma - 34p
2 Rwanda - 32p
1 Panama - 30p

Depending on where you go here it's 40p to 1.80 for a beer, usually 530ml which is about a pint I guess. The top end is the imported stuff like Budweiser, Heineken or Pabst Blue Ribbon. Local stuff is down the bottom of the price range and it's good stuff.

They do mate yes, at about 60p to one pound a pint. That's everywhere across China although it's brewed in......eerrrmmmmm.......Qingdao (sounds the same).......the local one here is Liq (leesh) which is brewed up the road in Guilin. It goes for between 30p and 80p a pint. You can get light, ice-beer and simply normal. I drink Pearl River quite a bit, that's from Guangzhou. Bit pissy but OK at the price.

My company does a lot of dealings over in China especially in Guangzhou and my boss goes over nearly every month think he might be setting something up over there. I keep trying to wangle going over there with him so hopefully might be in a couple of months.

No pints here. Just bottled Kalik (the local brew) and Heineken which works out at about 2.50pounds a bottle. The natives drink bottled Guinness and a similar stout brew call Strongback.

In the duty free shops liqour and tabs are cheap. Litre bottle of Smirnoff 5pounds and Absolut 8pounds. 200 Rothmans 20pounds.

No, you couldn't really be called Cornelius Atweasle and smoke Marlboro. It would just confuse everybody.

If he smokes Marlboro for any length of time he'll have to change his name to Cornelius Catwheezey.

It's the 60th anniversary of the Republic on 1st October and everybody is talking about Chairman Mao, there's a huge poster of him, Deng Xiao Ping and Zhang Shu Min that I can see off our balcony. No-one remembers the Boxer rebellion, they've kind of got stuck on the Long March. I wish Walls would turn up here, their sausages all have honey in them and they're foul. The gang of four are National Heroes and Kato was Japanese.

Don't mention - Japan, they hate 'em with a passion. Death, they've massively superstitious. Disease, they're terrified of it. Starvation, they've suffered it. Poverty, see starvation.

Assuming you can talk to them at all like!!

How Compo, yeah twist his arm a bit more, you'd like the mainland if you thought Hong Kong was good.
