Is it not possible chip that he could improve?

He only played 11 games for them scattered over 3 years?

Given a run in the side he may shine.

Just a thought.

no offence chip but i will judge for myself. There are plenty of coventry fans who would say the same about dimi. Plenty yeovil fans would say the same about jones. Besides i think there will be another keeper signed anyway

im not judging him, i'm simply passing on the opinion of a bloke who is paid to write about football, and who has seen the lad play both at first team and reserve team level a boatload of times.

the impression i was given is that he was signed by the godaful peter taylor for a lot of money on a 3 year contract, got given the first team shirt, played 7 league games and a couple of cup games, let in 18 goals, was out of his depth, and never played for them again.

the rest of the time he was palmed off on whoever would take him. last season for example he spent 6 months at falkirk and couldnt hold down a place in their team either.

he may be a world beater, and i sincerely hope he is. and clearly at some point he was deemed a very good prospect.

however am i the only one who isnt a tad concerned we have signed another keeper on a long contract that probably nobody employed at pools has ever seen play ?

They have been watching all potential targets for at least 3 months - FACT!

He said for three months not the last three.

It was stated in the Mail that all the targets have been scouted for at least three months.

At least he'll look good between the sticks.

Another great welcome for a player.

he has looked especially good in the last month. His save against his next door neighbour's young 'un in the back garden was top drawer

so they have been scouting this lad since last october then ?

i have a horrible feeling everyone at pools was convinced dimi would be signing, and that nobody at the club has seen this fella play recently.

I have a horrible feeling everyone at pools was convinced Dimi Would be signing, and that someone at the club had been trackin Flinders as a back up in case things went tits up like in January

but that wouldn't suit would it

oh come on Chip, your making it sound like they have never seen him play. Turner has taken in hundreds of 1st team/reserve team games over the last few years, he has scouts and people who's opinions he can trust. The fact is the lad is/was a hot prospect and has played the majority of his very early career at this sort of level. At 23 he is VERY young for a keeper, i certainly dont expect him to be the only GK signing, simply because we would need an experienced Keeper somewhere in the squad.

Shouldnt we be asking the fans of the teams he has played for recently for their opinion to get a relitively accurate balanced view, instead of one Journo who, lets face it, might not know the slightest thing about football!!!!!

3 clean sheets in 8 Scottish premier league games for a team who finished 3rd bottom....not a bad return for a young keeper the Palace fans name Butter Flinders!!

The fact that they named him that is worrying surely, comparable to us naming a goalkeeper cockfingers.

Im reluctantly seeing things from Chips viewpoint here. I have no confidence in CT or the scouting system when it comes to goalkeepers and the fact that this flinders lad was released over a month ago and not snapped up by anyone such as the teams he has been on loan to worries me. Chips mate clearly doesnt have a dislike to the bloke saying he is a nice lad but a crap keeper and I would sooner trust this lads opinion over Ct's tbh.

Theres a Palace fan at work who i asked about him and said he was once considered to be destined for great things. Played at all lower levels for England upto about under 18s i think. Said his debut for palace he had a shocker and never really recovered from that confidence wise. Spent most of last year on loan in scotland. A change of clubs could be just what he needs.

my mate gets paid a lot to write about football and has been doing it for a lot of years. if he says the lad had a mare at palace then im very inclined to believe that. its supported by the evidence. he was given a run in the team, conceeded a lot of goals after a nightmare start, and spent the next 2 seasons being loaned out to a handful of clubs.

if he had said he was a really promising keeper who had had a couple of iffy games then i would have posted that as well.

turner worried me when he said alb was the equal of any keeper in league one last season, and he worries me when he says this young lad who was a bag of nerves at palace and played 8 or so first team games last season in scotland will be our first choice keeper, even tho he has never seen him play, and cook will be the back up.

thats 2 young lads who hardly played any football last season with nobody with a bit of experience as back up.

im not writing the kid off, and as ive already said he will get my support every time he plays regardless of how he does.

i can accept a difference of opinion based on knowlege, but when you just blatantly assume that "Turner has never seen him play" then i'm inclined to think that you are speaking out of your arse.

Look we always get this.

A player is either a great signing or shite one. Usually its said having never seen either play.

He got in the England under 21 squad. He must have something.

He is, at least, a big lad. More Budtz than ALB.

He is gonna be number one, so thats it.

Now we need a left back and two strikers, and a foreign attacking midfielder promised by CT.

Chip i'm not saying you have formed an opinion on him, nor am i bothered even if you have.

Falkirk fans were less than impressed with him according to their message board, same with Palace.

Luton fans thought Boyd was rubbish, yet we know better

Coventry fans & Cardiff fans all slate Dimi

Our fans in the past have slated Neil Danns, Neil Collins, Steve Howard to name but a few but look at what they went on to achieve.

Players play differently at different clubs for a number of reasons, coaching technique, how settled they are, whether they fit into the style of play, confidence etc etc.

A permanent change could very well work wonders.

Besides you dont play for england under-20's if your rubbish, he may not have progressed like they had hoped but he must still have something

Well i would have preferred a keeper with a bit more experience i must say, but will support him 100%, cos he's now a Poolie. Incidentally, i remember a certain Joel Porter getting absolute pelters from sections of The Vic during the early part of his Pools career. Some players need a while to settle. Lets afford him that time eh?

Taking a punt on a young promising keeper whose few wilderness years has brought him within our reach is good business. Its not as if Pools risk bringing in illdisciplined unprofessional players so give him a chance and he likes it here we may have another goodun. Lets hope so. Come on Scott.

surely thats a lot more relevant than someone saying he has seen a photo of him and he looks like a good player, or he is really tall so he must be a good keeper ?

as you yourself have stated it seems a tad bizzarre that we are going into next season with 2 young keepers who played very little meaningful football last season, and without an experienced backup. i fail to see how stating this amounts to treason.

i was rolling my eyes at the 'no one at pools has seen him play' part of your statement. For Turner to turn around and say 'He is my No. 1' then he must be more than confident of his ability, and that can only happen if he has seen him play (or someone who's opinion he trusts has seen him).

Fuck me im agreeing with Chip. He only passed on someones elses views. And I also agree that from what Turner says, it doesnt sound like he has seen him play.

Id rather have someone in who has experience than an untried young lad but fingers crossed he shows why he played at that high level.

At least we have a keeper now!

Im not writing him off merely saying that I have a few initial concerns which will hopefully be dispelled once he starts playing.

As soon as someone posts such a message the usual crowd start ranting about how his is being wrongly written off before he has even played for us. There is nothing like being melodramatic is there! I have not seen anyone on here say he is bobbins yet.

I hope the Palace and falkirk (?) fans and coaching staff HAVE made errors of judgement and we benefit from it.

i agree that i am surprised that he has been brought in as No.1

However i'm criticising the comment about Pools not even seeing him.

At the end of the day Pools have signed an ex England U-20 player who once went for a deal which could have ended up at £1 Million. That puts him in the same sort of bracket as say Ben Clark (ex England u-19 captain i believe?), and price wise as someone with the potential of a James Brown/Adam Boyd.

With the right coaching and a bit of support there is no reason why this kid could not be our best ever keeper (based solely on his potential that Palace bought into). As a keeper he wont start maturing for another 2-3 year so we might have to wait to see him at his best.

I dont know what to make of it......if we had brought him in with say Dimi on loan then i would have been ecstatic, but only him? I'm surprised, but excited at the same time

edit... oh he also had trials at Chelsea & Wigan, he's definately got something good going for him

At 23 he is VERY young for a keeper, i certainly dont expect him to be the only GK signing, simply because we would need an experienced Keeper somewhere in the squad.

you seem to be agreeing with me and criticising me at the same time.

Go on then, go for a trial at Chelsea..... £200 quid says you dont get one. Besides they invited him for a trial, which means they were interested
