according to a mate of mine who is a season ticket holder at Mansfield, he thinks we may get Barker in January as they're expecting a mass clearout. Basically they can't get anyone else in until they get rid of the high earners.

Duffy on loan till the end of the season, Barker signed in January, Brown and Joel back from injury, Foley fighting for his place back. We'll have the league won by the end of Feb!!!

Couldn't get a more contrasting opinion from everything I've read from the Mansfield fans. He's their club captain, 13 goals this season, 23 last season and 31 is not 'too old' . We have a goalscoring problem, we only have one player at the club who can do it regularly at the moment and theres every chance he'll only be around for another half a dozen games. We'd do very very well to get a player better than Barker.

duffy here until end of jan which will tie in with either a bid for him or for barker - me barker can do the job as his record shows - but i'd rather throw 250k at hull for someone who we can sell in three yrs time that 250k to mansfield for someone who will be done in 3 years time - he could well be another one to add to the list of done great elsewhere and nowt here - lormor, jones, freestone.....etc etc etc etc

Didn't the latter two keep us in the league ?

I dunno really - they had two good games between them and that was it i'd say - more like the (as much as i hate to say it) mongo MBE's presence in midfield and strodder's sheer graft that did it in my eyes.

jones and freestone's records overall where very poor at pools when compared to elsewhere and they were big on promise and slight on delivery

Oh I'm not saying that they were world class but they scored some important goals that kept us in the league.

I'm thinking of the two games at the end of 1999/00

Pools 2 Chester 0 Freestone, Jones
Pools 3 Scarborough 0 Freestone 2

Without those points we would have been relegated.

Possibly true, but if they hadn't been so shit in the other games they played in we wouldn't have needed those results.

I think you are spot on about Barker, I'm sure he's got a two year deal at Mansfield, so will want at least that with us.
However, what happens if Duffy doesn't want to sign a permanent deal or Hull's deal involves Nelson going the other way ?

A 30 odd year old has been who has failed at a higher level or a 22 year old who is actively performing in the team. Sounds like a no brainer to me.

if nelson leaves, and its a very big if, then i cant see what he has to gain from signing for hull.

the main thing keeping the king here is his bairn. is it any quicker to drive to hull than either derby or preston ? marginally ?

so why would he head to a club in turmoil and embroiled in a relegation fight who may well be in the same division as pools next season ,rather than a bigger club, on bigger wages, that is pushing for promotion.

regardless of what his agent says ive never had the impression that the great man is money motivated. he has a good lifestyle near his family and is worshipped as a demi god by fans of the football team he plays for. i hope and i pray that he stays and that duffy signs as well.

amen !

It's not like that though, why is it one or the other? Personally I think we have zilch chance of signing Duffy and it looks like Barker is available. I really hope Duffy is signed permanently, but if I could look into the future and Barker is at the club I'd be quite happy.

Nelson is an amazing player (even if his distribution was fucking awful last Saturday, and I mean awful) but if we could get a fee for him and invest the money I wouldn't mind too much. Its normally easier to get solid centre halfs at this level than it is strikers.

Chip, how many clubs recoup what they have paid for a player only a year earlier?

£175,000 and he's ours i reckon, if he agrees to the personal terms obviously

If we paid that and signed him, he would be the bargain of the century.

i'd love us to sign duffy (hes only 22) hes a long term signing if we can get him. barker has scored goals all of his career and could do it for us maybe got 2-3 good yrs left in him look at stev claridge , if nelson goes (god forbid) we gotta ready made replacement in gary liddle.
