Yes you can travel directly to York, it is about 50 mins from Hartlepool to York, via Eaglescliffe, Northallerton & Thirsk.

The trains times are earlyish, middayish and sometime later.

The rail company is called Grand Central

No Direct from Hartlepool to York all need 1 change at Thornaby unless you get the really early Train.

7.08 - 8.17 (Direct)
8.15 - 9.55 (Change at Thornaby. Arrive at Thornaby 8.38 Depart Thornaby 9.05)
9.15 - 10.54 (Change at Thornaby. Arrive at Thornaby 9.38 Depart Thornaby 10.04)

York - Hartlepool
18.47 - 20.00 (Direct)
18.26 - 19.49 (Change at Thornaby. Arrive at Thornaby 19.17 Depart Thornaby 19.25)
