Barrett....

McCunnie.... Collins....Nelson.... Liddle

Power.... Rowell.... Clark.... Monkhouse

Porter....Brown

Reasons why

BARRETT the better of the 2 keepers I have seen was comfortable today against Huddersfield and deserves to be the number 1.

McCUNNIE best right back at club and only other option is Sweeney , losing the option of best attacking midfielder at club, even though I dont start him.

NELSON and COLLINS... close call could leave Nelson out and play Clark though I have gone for him as holding midfielder.

LIDDLE, I hear the gasps as I play him left back , far to good a player to leave out and can do the job, of left back even though not his position.

POWER, Immense against Sunderland and can give us attacking options providing decent balls in

ROWELL, After today deserves to be in starting line up created chances was creative and coming up from midfield to link with front two.

MONKHOUSE, On last season and fact that he is best attacking left sided midfielder in club.

BROWN AND PORTER, More movement than Barker and can create chances for Rowell and other midfielders to come on to.

Subs Cook(GK i dont rate Budtz) Sweeney Barker Jones Humphies

POWER and ROWELL could maybe exchange positions to give more options during game without using subs.

That is also a strong bench with a number of variations possible to change a game.

I see four players out of position, square pegs in round holes which highlights the lop sided nature of our centre midfielder packed squad. It's actually quite amusing that considering we have 800 midfield players you've picked a centre back to play in midfield!!

Personally I'd go with a different formation:

Barrett
Collins....Nelson.... Clark
Power.... Rowell.... Bolland... Sweeney.... Monkhouse
Porter....Brown

Which 4 are out of Position.

2 maybe in Clark and Liddle.

Power may not actually be a right winger in the sense but is in midfield. He deserves a starting place on yesterday's performance.

I'd say McCunnie, Liddle, Clark, and Power are all out of position.

I think with the squad we have we are more suited to playing 5-3-2. We have three good centre backs and not really any recognised full backs. With Brown moving up front we don't have a right winger either, how about this?

..................New Keeper please Danny..................

..............Collins........Nelson...............Clark..........

Sweeney................................................Humphreys

...............Liddle.........Power......Monkhouse..........

Stick Power on the wing and you are wasting a shirt, he is an out and out central midfielder who is strong in the tackle, breaks up opposition attacks from the middle and can pick out some quality passes too from what I've seen so far.

If you had 10 strikers at a club who scored a hatful each in pre-season you wouldn't play four in defence and four in midfield as well as the two in their proper positions just because they all deserved their place. You would pick the best of the bunch and give them the starting roles in their proper positions and thats exactly what Wilson should do.

We would be hammered down the wings with that formation, Monkhouse is an out and out attacking winger and I reckon wouldn't be too keen on tracking back, as PG says Power is an out and out central midfielder who would also be lost as a wing back. Plus I think Liddle should be one of the first names on the team sheet

I was thinking more of Boland dropping back into a kind of diamond formation, besides I thought we were already getting hammered down the wings.

Mine would be

Barrett....

Sweeney.... (Two from Collins, Nelson or Clark) Humphreys

Power.... Rowell.... Liddle.... Monkhouse

Porter....Brown

ALB- Because he is Peter Shilton compared to Butdz.

Sweeney- I think he's better than McCunnie at right back who looked poor against Newcastle reserves.

Collins, Nelson or Clark: I cannot decide.

Humphreys- Our only decent left back.

Power- May be a central midfielder but his crossing is meant to be according to ADG whose opinion I value greatly. Proved he is good at crossing and taking players on in his 3 touches vs. Newcastle.

Liddle- One of two central midfielders (bar Power) who impress me.

Rowell- One of two central midfielders (bar Power) who impress me. Looks a very good player from the very few times I've seen him. Could also swap with Power and play right wing.

Monkhouse- Unless Robson plays like he did vs. Newcastle all the time then he is the only choice. Would like to see Robson progress if he can though.

Porter and Brown- Our most creative strike force and we won't get lazy and play the long ball.

I'm with PJ on this one - though I aint seen any of the pre-season games.
I will be there versus Colchester though.
Looks to me like a new keeper and Monky and Porter playing well (despite the fact they may have grudges) could mean we have a decent team here

Rowell was way too lightweight at times today, he would get roasted in a league match against hardened pro's.

Subs bench at best for now. Definately one for the future though.

team has to be.....

ALB

McCunnie
Nelson
Collins
Humphreys

Liddle
Power
Boland
Monkhouse

Porter
Brown

Subs:

Budtz
Sweeney
Clark
Jones
Barker

Not many teams play 3-5-2 anymore, bit of a dead formation.

We'd get exposed too much down the flanks I reckon, Sweens and Richie would bomb on too much leaving too much space where full backs would be.

Also if they play too defensive we lack width going forward.

It might be a bit of a "dead formation" but it's the one which best suits our squad.
Both Sweeney and Humphries are ideally suited to wingback roles - why wilson hasn't done this before is beyond me

Personally i'm not a fan of it.

Our centre backs are too slow to run about to the left and the right, getting dragged out wide they would get ripped apart by fast wingers.

Would love to be proved wrong like, it's a results business and if we get results with that formation then go for it.

I completely agree, liddle could easily play left back, yes it would be wasting his considerable talent but we would be very strong at the back if he did. Of course this depends on Power being as good as everyone says he is!!!

Lee Barret
Mccunie Collins Clark Humps
Sweeney Power Liddle Monkhouse
Brown Porter

Ideally replace the keeper and both full backs and I think we would do very well.

Right, on today's showing...

ALB ... but not with any kind of conviction
Liddle Clark Collins Humps ... but no problem with Nelson instead of Collins as long as Ben plays
Foley  McCunnie Boland Monkhouse ... I did say on TODAY's showing
Brown Porter ... for me they don't really complement each other but I don't see who else would complement the king of soul

I might be tempted to put Sweeney instead of Boland but all I saw today was a right back, not a central midfielder.
