Best atmosphere at small grounds

Smaller football grounds have the best crowd atmosphere, scientists on Wearside have claimed. A survey of 443 supporters from 26 clubs revealed those who felt their venue was too small gave it a good match-day atmosphere. The study, led by the University of Sunderland, also showed fans of teams who had recently moved either strongly loved or hated their new stadiums.

Dr Stephanie Charleston said: "Larger stadiums don't automatically result in a better atmosphere. "Club directors might want to bear this in mind when considering a move to a new ground, especially as the process of moving can be an upsetting experience for long-standing fans.

"When relocating a team, fan involvement is crucial. Understanding of what specific sets of supporters look for in terms of atmosphere should be incorporated into the planning process."

I don't think George Reynolds put fan involvement high up his list of priorities when he built the stadium. All he thought about was look at this glorious edifice to my greatness, now all come and worship. It's what you call a rich mans folly...
