Did anyone actually understand what the hell they were on about? I just listened to them on the radio and I'm still no wiser. At the time I couldn't make out the words so I just looked tham up and it ain't helped.

For example:

GENO - 03/05/1980
2 weeks at #1 - 14 weeks on chart

Back in '68 in a sweaty club (Oh Geno)
Before Jimmy's Machine and The Rocksteady Rub (Oh Geno)
On a night when flowers didn't suit my shoes
After a week of flunking and bunking school
The lowest head in the crowd that night
Just practicing steps and keeping out of the fights

Academic inspiration, you gave me none
You were Michael the lover, the fighter that won
And now just look at me as I'm looking down on you
No I'm not being flash, it's what I'm built to do

That man took the stage, his towel was swinging high (Oh Geno)
This man was my bombers, my Dexy's, my high (Oh Geno)

The crowd, they all hailed you and chanted your name
But they never knew like we knew me and you were the same
And now you're all over, your song is so tame
You fed me, you bred me, I'll remember your name

Academic inspiration, you gave me none
You were Michael the lover, the fighter that won
And now just look at me as I'm looking down on you
No I'm not being flash, it's what I'm built to do

Oh Geno (oh geno)

Oh Geno

The only question about them was which drugs they were taking the most of.

Edit: weren't they named after some or other drug ?

Formed in 1978, Dexy's took their name from the commercially available amphetamine Dexedrine. Dexedrine was one of the favoured drugs of 60s mods and soul boys and was an essential part of any night out. It enabled users to stay awake and kept energy levels at a maximum for 'All Nighters', hence the name Dexy's Midnight Runners.

Bombers was a reference to yet another amphetamine pill with the street name Black Bombers.

Geno Washington was an American Soul Singer who found fame in the UK (NOt America..he was unknown there) doing sets at The Marquee full of Soul Covers. A couple of these got released by Pye and were staples of 60's parties due to their non-stop nature and danceability. His band were shiit hot. I've got the albums and lret's just say he must have been better "Live" because they are very average!

top show live seen them a few times at "REDCAR" when it was a mecca for soul....

I thought 'Come on Eileen' was about Rowland trying to hide the sausage with his chaste catholic girlfriend but I might be wrong.

You can buy a T-Shirt on T-Shirthell.com that says 'I Came On Eileen.' Only about £15.

I witnessed Mr Rowlands downfall at Leeds festival, the last one at Temple Newsam some four years ago. He did karaoke versions of 'The Greatest Love Of All.' 'You'll Never Walk Alone' and something else between bands. He released his solo album the next week and another friend who witnessed the same show bought it out of some dreadful fascination. Creation withdrew it in the same week and she now has one of only 500 ever sold.

Mr Rowland went into therapy soon after.
