I reckon a fair proportion of English people want Scotland to qualify, and generally want them to do well. Why they desperately want us to fail is beyond me.......

It's historical, obviously, but also totally irrational. I get a bit cheesed off being slated by certain Irish and Scottish persons whose grandparents very possibly lived in the next village to my own ancestors.
But, paradoxically, that too is common in football innit. There're quite a few on this board who 'hate' teams and fans attached to neighbouring towns.

Bizarre situation up here is that a lot of me mates are all going mental at the prospect of beating the Italians and also hoping that Isreal get stuffed by the Ruskies - thing is most of them are half /english - ie one parent born South of the Border. And they fecking hate having it pointed out to them!!

It will be a bad night in the boozers if results go their way tonight ...

Maybe the hatred comes from the murder. rape .land stealing. and pillaging your forefathers layed on the scots.

The Picts (modern day Scots) started it all, after the Romans abandoned these shores. It only stopped when the "English" people of the day asked the Roman-trained Saxons to come across and kick them back across the border.
Unfortunately those people were possibly just as bad as the previous marauders, and eventually ended up taking control of the country known today as England. Only the Celts in the South West and Wales repelled them, and stopped them taking over there as well. That's not even mentioning the Vikings, the Angles, the Normans, the Dutch (!), the French etc etc in any of English history. Plus the gene pool from the original Britons (Celts etc)
Anyway, the English people are basically a melting pot of every horrible marauder that ever lived, so maybe it isn't so hard to understand after all where all of our naturally aggressive DNA comes from!!!

I find the Scots to be as kind as sorted as NE folk - other than sport at which they all herd together with a passionate hatred of the Auld Enemy. I have tried talking/arguing/reasoning and it all boils down to they hate the stereotypical INNGERLAND mentality and character. I generally agree with that so we get along just fine - until they start bolloking on about supporting the side englerland are playing - the number of phone calls today where they've given it "Come on the russkies" is unbelievable!

So, as far as my fellow islanders are cobcerned - I hope the Italians spank them silly. Personally, I hope the Scots do it and get through - they have palyed with passion and a pride in the shirt that should make Lampard and the like ashamed. As far as Englerand goes - couldn't give a toss. Only game worth watching this weekend starts at 4 on Sunday.

Talk to a scotsman and he believes, really believes he is superior in all ways to everyone. In truth they have a far better tradition of being articulate than do the grunting english. Their attitude of superiority equates to that of the of the privately educated, english upper middle class who asume they're above the common herd.
