Just a bit of quick advice...

A scammer keeps ringing me saying I've won the oppertunity to enter their lottery and that all he needs is my bank account details etc. He's from Planet49.co.uk

Obviously I'm not thick so won't fall for him.

Is there a number I can ring to report him.

Thanks.

Just have his number blocked, it's pretty easy to do. Or record his call and make a complaint to the Police. They'll sort it out in 2012 or maybe later.

Alternately, take 5 minutes to invent a set of bank details & give him those,at least that way you get to waste some of his time too.

Have a whistle by the side of the phone and give him a quick blast when he calls again, or just answer the phone and just leave him hanging on while you go back to whatever you were doing.

Thanks for the advice.

He rang a few hours after I posted that message, just before I was about to set off.

I told him, "From the legal advice I have obtained, I have been told to explicitly tell you not to phone me otherwise action will be taken"... he soon put the phone down and even apologised.

It doesn't seem to have discouraged him a lot......

I am on the telephone preference service.

That's why it wrangled me so much that they phoned me.

They claimed that I had entered a competition and thus agreed to let them ring me, although i very much doubt that claim.

On a related topic, why do the telephone companies let people withhold their numbers when making calls? Seems to me that nuisance calls could be stopped overnight if nuisances knew they could be traced on 1471.

I do know they ring random numbers.

For instance in Worksop all the number start with 486, 487 and 500. So if you tag three numbers on the end of that, or more simply, let a computer programme do it and make sure it will ring before you dial it, there isn't a lot anyone can do to stop it in the first instance at least.

Seems like Mr Gaunt did the right thing anyway.

I don't know what facilities your operator makes available but with mine I just went on the web site, signed in, and ticked the "bar all calls from withheld numbers" box. I doubt any of you are using my operator like.
