A few years ago I grew some veg; beetroot, sprouts and herbs. At the time I had a thought that it would be a good idea to have an allotment. I went to the council website and applied; this was probably three or four years ago. We’ll bugger me with a fish fork if they haven’t emailed me today offering me one!

So the point of the point…. Are there any allotmenteers on here?

I remember my dad having one when, as kids, we lived in Walthamstow, East London and him cycling (what a crickety thing his bike was) to his allotment in Hackney, about 5 miles away.

The first house I bought when first married had a garden about 200 yards long with a width of 20 yards and backed onto a farmers field. Grew lots of veg there and became a potato grower expert!

Allotments do seem a rarity now but good luck to you if you take one on.

My younger brother has always had one and my daughter has one, much to my surprise. We’ve got a huge garden, the wife has a green house and shows more interest in her beetroot than she did in her kids.
Not for me though.

Yes, I share one with Mr.Horden, we've had it about 3 years now. Took a bit of a rebuild as it had been empty a while, also to get the greenhouse back up after storm Arwen flattened it and part of the perimeter fence but it can be very rewarding and therapeutic if you enjoy messing with cuttings and compost heaps etc.

We had one & grew allsorts, the kids loved going round with me & the misses.
We've gave it up now as they're older, not interested & we just can't be arsed anymore.
It's OK if your retired, but bloody hard work fitting around everything else in life.

Dont take on too much at once and enjoy it and dont make it a chore.

If you sit down to eat something you have grown a sense of satisfaction comes over you.
I have never had an allotment but like gardening and the pleasure I get sitting in an area that i have created.
I don't sit for long before I notice something wants "doing".
Give it a go and if you find it is too much or get fed up, you can always back away and let someone else have it.
You have to be prepared to allocate a lot of time and accept that things need to be done to a basic time table and not when you see fit.
Good luck.

thevery last thing that interests me. prefer to give those who have one a bit of cash for the fruits of their labour. know of 3 close to me where a lot of produce gets put onto the compost heap as with the local council meddling they are not allowed to sell things they grow. those that do have to be aware of the clip board nosy parker to avoid being stripped of their allotment.

Good to hear Horden is still going strong. He'd struggle to be the Bunker's resident pessimist these days - there's so much competition ;)

True, he hasn't been near the Vic now for some years, that's what Pools are like unfortunately, they grind you down till you just don't care anymore, I'm beginning to head the same way myself, finding it really hard to show any enthusiasm for what's been happening over the last few years.
