I for some reason liked Lulu’s version of ‘Man who sold the World’ but kept quiet till I found out it was Bowie who approached her to record it and co-operated in its production. Still like it but keep it quiet…on the World Wide Web banghead

Two Little Boys. Very emotional song especially at Christmas. Thanks Rolf for destroying a memory.

I believe that it’s Bowie playing saxophone on it.

Bit the opposite but do like Phil Coulter (Londonderry boy) whose latest is Steal Away with a choir of Ukranians. He also, amongst other music, wrote and recorded "The Town I love so well" referring to Derry. You can google him and hear his music on You Tube.

Lulu's version of this is brilliant, better than Bowie's to me.

The early 70s Bowie LP of the same name is thunderous stuff, I have it on vinyl and it's one of my favourite albums, the bass playing is superb and some critics think it's the first Metal album!

Because I like poppy pop I have loads of guilty pleasures, Car 67 by Driver 67, One More Night by Yellow Dog, numerous songs by Middle Of The Road - I could go on....

But won't.

Bowies version is a bit of a dirge, slow and drawn out, but not unpleasant and I do like it.

I remember in the early 70’s a lad we used to talk to in passing used to be in the town centre….he used to carry an LP sleeve under his arm to show off stpid …anyway as we spoke to him it slipped under his arm and hit the floor , my mate picked it up and said …..’it’s bloody empty”…..he lost all credibility after that

Might have been my ex brother in law, he used to carry LPs about under his arm when he was a teenager, I never got round to asking him why.

You got to admit the lyrics in songs in the 60/70s are oh so different from the songs later.

You know how to squeeze me
(Woah, oh)
You know how to please me
(Woah, oh)
You're learnin' it easy

And I thought you might like to know
When a girl's meaning "Yes", she says, "No"

Didn't know anyone needed to deny Sweet. sctatchinghead They dressed up and wore the eyeliner when loads of others were doing the same - Bowie, Bolan, Roxy Music, Roy Wood, Alice Cooper, Mott the Hoople etc. etc.

Ballroom Blitz is a classic, and their self-written hard rock B-sides are canny too.

The Sweet were a rock band and admitted they hated the songs they sung, Ballroom Blitz was based on a gig in Kilmarnock, The Ballroom Blitz" was inspired by an incident on 27 January 1973 when the band were performing at the Grand Hall in Kilmarnock, Scotland, and were driven offstage by a bottling. Ironically the singer the late Brian Connelly was Scottish.

The Sweet are ACE. I'm of the age whereby they were one of my first bands. They had the poppy stuff (which I like) and also the rock stuff, which i also like.

The LP Desolation Boulevard is especially good.

As musicians they were all gifted, all four of them. People forget about Steve Priest but he was a great bass player and on top of that did the high vocal bits too.

Yeah The Sweet basically a rock band making their money with Wig Wam Bam and Co Co etc. Great stuff. Jonathon King comes to my mind. I know, self proclaimed paedophile but loved all his inventions of bands and he was instrumental for Genesis and 10cc.

Karen Carpenter’s voice, faultless. Mentioned this to a lad at college into music expecting a laugh out of him, but he agreed…I was more than a bit surprised.
