He's a midfielder by trade. I thought we were after a striker? Anyway, not gonna complain, may well be the dynamic type that would enhance the current team.

Judging by Bristol Rovers and Stevenage forums.... not really the kind of gamble we should be taking.

Coventry fans say otherwise, He was a regular in the team that won promotion to the Championship.

He's been at two different clubs since and has been absolutely slated. Not intersted in massive gambles. Gambling is what put us in this position. We need better.

Totally agree - a quick reading of the Bristol Press rings alarm bells

And some said Hartley past it, Dolan not far behind, Dodds a gamble, Pruti a bigger gamble.
Almost sounds like the manager can,t be trusted........By some.

Every signing is a gamble. This lad is a BIG gamble. He doesn't even get as far as dividing opinion, its ALL bloody negative. This is the type of signing that's supposed to get us out of trouble? To save our league status and stop us dropping into that awful, almost inescapable division again?

Ever thought he doesn't want to play for Barton or Barton didn't like him. Same as McDonald for us, I think he's a good player, but others start ahead of him.

I still stand by all of the above and hopefully they all prove themselves.

If we signed Danny Johnson - on the other hand - I’d say that’s not a gamble. League 2 player, smack bang in form, and unquestionably a top signing.

McDonald = not good enough. The answer isn't signing more players like him.

I might have thought that it was merely a personality clash if it wasn't for the really strong negative opinions from Stevenage as well or if I thought that we were in a situation where we could take gambles like this. We can't. End of.

They all get a chance when they pull on the shirt. Even desperate gamble signings. You shout encouragement, hope like crazy that the gamble pays off and wish that your chairman would let your manager sign much more solid players.

This. If he ever signs, I'll watch him play before I venture an opinion.

Have read similar that he has turned us down, sounds like Mansfield wanted a bidding war and he only wants Walsall.

I do think Raj going public with the bids is an interesting tact. Perfect foil for when we get turned down by all the top targets and end up with an U21 player on loan from Sheffield United. Maybe a bit cynical.

It’s also not writing players off before they have played - but you can quite easily pass judgement on the pedigree of the player you have signed. I said exactly the same when we signed all the Scots in the summer.

Say for instance we signed Lapslie, Armstrong, Hawkins or Nichols from this division, I’d say we had a very strong chance of delivering improvement in our quality and then football results… you only need to have a small knowledge base of lower league football (or check Wikipedia) to know they will be good.

A player binned and slagged off quite extensively by his past two clubs poses a different proposition altogether. Fishing in a different pond comes to mind… but yes, he could turn out to be a master-stroke, like the rest we’ve signed.

Plus all signing are gambles from free agents to 100 million pounds. First 1 minute could break Arm or leg and be out for 6 weeks or get killed in a plane crash.

Correct. You can know full well that you've signed a cheap option player and be pissed off about it but still give them full support come Saturday afternoon.

According to some website I looked at today the guy who got sent off against Pools on Saturday is worth £250,000 transfer value. I wouldn't have thought Pools or Rochdale included worth that much in total.

Lets buy him. After all you can't judge him until you've seen him play in a Pools shirt.

How else are you gonna judge them…they may be crap, they may be a surprise, but only one way to find out. Nothings nailed on.
