I've heard that it's not opening at all. Don't know how far true that is though.

all leasehold pubs will eventually close because of two reasons

The breweries/pub owning companies are far too greedy, they want top dollar for their beer and you are tied to them as the beer suppliers. I could have saved £26,000 on beer purchase costs alone last year if I had bought all my beer from Teesside Beer Wholesalers. Bear in mind that Teesside Beer Wholesalers get their beer from the same suppliers as me (i.e. the breweries), and that they still make a profit in selling it onto me at £26,000 less purchase cost to me, and that gives you an indication of the brewery greed.
Don't even start me about the amount of rent they want.

Secondly, the local Council and Valuation Office are f****g arseholes, the lot of them. They have no idea about what is a fair rate of council tax to pay vs business turnover. They are also asking for money that isn't there. They do not care if you go under or not, so long as they get this year's money.Their rules and guidelines for getting a business rates reduction are an absolute f***g joke.

I wondered why pubs were closing down right left and centre. It hardly matters what you try to do these days, someone somewhere will screw it up.
Is it still feasible to run a pub that's not tied to a brewery?

Thanks Salty. That's where Groovy had his 40th a couple of months ago. Have only ever been in there for functions, not just for a few pints.

yes, you could definitely make a killing if you could buy your own beer in from wherever you like.
This pub makes a good profit before rent and council tax are accounted for, then it's all wiped out. And some. If I didn't have such a well-paid job elsewhere then we would have been bankrupt a year ago.
They also make you buy the fixtures and fittings, so if they decrease in value or get broken at all, then the pub owner company don't lose any money - YOU do.
You are also expected to decorate the gaff, and carry out repairs!!!!!
Everyone (including me and the wife) who has ever had a go, thinks they can make it work. You can't. The odds are loaded against you to the extent that it's impossible. They know it, but they don't care - 'cos they're making THEIR money and that's all they care about.

That's just despicable. How can they live with themselves, making money out of exploiting people like that?

Also it's just stupid on their part...allowing pubs to close altogether instead of cutting their profits a bit. Surely in the long run, they lose out?

My local is like that. There's always new people coming in and giving it a go and then leaving. There's been loads of different landlords.

people are generally wising up to tied leases now. Pubs are reverting back to managed houses, where there is a duty manager on a wage. This is because all of their retail outlets are closing!!
I played hard ball with our brewery, and basically they've halved the rent because they had to!! The bad publicity I would have caused them wouldn't have been worth it.
The snag is, you can't walk away without getting hammered even more, due to the terms of the lease. Pure, unadulterated, unashamed greedy people, bar none.

Now for those twa-ts at the Council and the Valuation Office (who blame each other, coincidentally, and rather conveniently for the ridiculous level of council tax)...............people in local Government are immune to this kind of thing - they are pure bas-tards- plain and simple.
