Watching ‘who do you think you are’ featuring Derek Jacobi and he said something that got me thinking about why now he didn’t ask his parents and grandparents about their ancestors. I suspect that generation were more modest folk. My Auntie informed me last years and she’s nearly 90 that my mother was in the Army based at Hellfire Corner at St Margaret’s at Cliffe east of Dover from 1940- 44 on AA guns. Never mentioned anything about it to us, but even funnier was when I was about 19 about to go out and there was a documentary about Tottenham on the box and she suddenly said “Aw, there’s me Uncle Billy”..turns out Bill Nicholson was her uncle, the first manager to win the double and never told us…. Mind she used to say when we were watching football her uncle Bill was good at it and we took no notice. I’d have had a field day at school.
Anyone on here discovered something that totally surprised them years down the line?

Always found out that those who did the most in the war actually said the least about it and never came out as sergeants like the non fighters say they did.
