I hate it when people mention sg's as it brings back a bad memory of mine.

I had one of these about a year ago..

Image

(it is a Gibson SG MAestro Deluxe - pretty rare)

but money problems meant that I had to sell it. I had it valued at just shy of a grand. I struggled to sell it though and ended up shoving it on ebay. It went for £500. banghead sadx

The singer / guitarist of Supergrass always reminded me of Stuart Irvine (ex HUFC).

By the way gravedisorder, I'm more of a Fender man myself (Strat & Tele) but your old Gibson looked mighty fine.

A lovely guitar for sure. I wonder if the reason they seldom mention supergrass is because others were better elvis? Never my cup of tea I have to say although I'd take 'em over Blur any day of the week. Peak of britpop (horrible name) for me was dog man star - surely a better guitarist too (speaking purely as a fan rather than an artiste like so many - impressively - on here).

That guitar's beautiful, I always wanted an SG as well. I almost dabbled with an Epiphone copy a good few years ago but I stuck out for a Fender Tele instead and now I'm on my second one. I had to abandon two guitars when I came over here. One of them was the one I had in my first ever band. Heartbreaking. Guitars are like jewellery to me. You just know when you've got a good one on.

The funny thing with the whole "Britpop" thing is the hype it was given by the press, when it appeared to pass the average record-buying punter by. 94-96, the height of Britpop. The big two in the battle, Blur and Oasis, had 2 no 1's between them, wheras Westlife had about 7.
Yet the whole Blur v Oasis thing was massive news at the time.

There was some good bands and some Dodgy bands (pun intended), at least though some half decent music was in the charts. Remember what it was like in the early 90's after the brief "Madchester" scence died? You had to look right under the radar to get anything interesting.

Jive Bunny, Bryan Adams, Wet Wet Wet anyone?

Always thought Supergrass were a bit underrated. Yes, Alright is a bit of a weight round their necks, but the songs I always think of by them are Caught by the Fuzz, Sun Hits the Sky and Tonight - can't be bad....

Britpop was a bit strange really, suddenly bands like Gay Dad were being touted as the next big thing for no conceivable reason. Blur had been around for years before it kicked off (they were actually around in the late "Madchester" era) and have continued to be around. Quite a few of the bands had actually been around and even successful for a while, and then got the label Britpop because they happened to be British and making Pop records.....

As with pretty much all labels, the bands that continue to innovate and challenge are the ones that transcend it and get remembered, while others remain very much of their time.

If that is an open question to anyone I can name loads of Spice Girls songs, Say You'll Be There, Mama, Too Much, Viva Forever, 2 Become 1, Stop and Spice Up Your Life are just some of the classics.....

Westlife were bobbins......

The Spice Girls did some good songs, like the one above, they are certainluy better than some of the stuff that people listen to on here. Someone on here actually admitted to liking The Smiths not too long ago....

The songs you mention are ok i suppose. Nothing special but ok to listen to once or twice a year. But if you think that everything that the Spice Girls did was rubbish then you must be having a laugh. They certainly did more memorable stuff than The Smiths......

Whether you rate them or not, The Spice Girls had far more number one singles than the smiths. If you were to do a survey family fortunes style more people would be able to name Spice Girls songs than Smiths ones.
