Whilst we're all sitting around getting fat I thought I'd knock up a circuit training routine in the garden for me and the missus. Nothing too complicated, there are six stations with ; sit ups, press ups start jumps, skipping, squat thrusts and squats. We're doing five minutes steps as a warm up too and some stretching exercises before and after.

Routine goes; 60 seconds then 15 seconds rest and onto the next one. We started at 30 seconds and 15 but upped it today.

I've learned several things...

I'm not as young as I was
I'm not as fit as I was
Exercise still hurts
Muscles can get really painful.

Still, I think I need it so we'll keep going although I think we might have done too much too soon.

I needed to do something, the scales hit an all time high the other day and I broke 100 kg's. I looked in the mirror and said..... you fat bastard, sort it out!

100kg you should be so lucky. We have a fortuitously acquired exercise bike but I gave it up after 5 minutes bored out of my skull.

I'm still around 13 stone at 6ft tall. I try and cycle everywhere which usually keeps me ok. What's difficult is that with lockdown I'm having to exercise just for the sake of it.

I usually keep myself relatively fit through a couple of games of 5 a side a week. Maybe the odd squash game every now and then. Without them I'm finding it difficult to keep up exercising.

I've been for a few runs, but they're outrageously boring. I think it's mentally challenging more than anything for me. I can happily chase after a ball full pelt for an hour, but ask me to run 5k and I find it difficult.

Cycling is an easier one for me. There's something about it that I find less daunting and just generally more fun. I think that's the remedy for me during this lockdown.

I should have added that we're not even allowed out for a 1/2 hour run/walk/bike ride here. I go everywhere by bike usually. But pedalling like fuck without moving just doesn't do it for me.

Walk , Walk , Walk for weight loss. a 3 mile power walk every day and a 10 mile walk once a week. Do this for a month and I reckon you would lose a stone easily, combine this with a reasonably good diet cutting out the shite like, chocolate, crisps, biscuits, fizzy drinks, cakes. Oh ! and cut down on the alcohol intake , no more than 5 pints or a bottle of wine a week

agree horden. had to pack up playing for awhile in 1978. went up to over 14 stone from just over 12. bought a dog, he took me out for 2 hours in a morning and 45 minutes at tea time. went down to my normal weight in less than 6 months. always hated running with a passion[always class it as punishment in training] and cannot ride a bike.

A little bit of everything is good, everyone is different and depends what you want to achieve, weight loss, become a muscleman , super fit or all three. Can't run for my life, I'm heavy on my feet and it would be bad for my knees I reckon. Cycling is okay for me in small doses, but usually get saddle sore. I love swimming but I found it doesn't make you lose weight but bulks you up, a look I don't like. I like the outdoors and nature anyway , so walking is ideal for me , not just exercise , but good for the soul, especially at the moment, as wildlife seems to be flourishing , as a result of the lockdown perhaps?

its surprising what you start seeing again and develop a bit of interest in whilst walking. had no interst in wildlife or wild plants till i got walking. now we regularly feed birds whilst out especially pheasants whose numbers have grown since christmas. we actually have one that follows us till we drop seeds for him and then goes back to his original pile. goodo to see the wild flowers coming out at least 2 weeks earlier than normal this year. only downside with the warmer weather is more folk with kids out doing their so called exercise with the obvious litter increase.

Calorie deficit first, and at your age walking/light running with some resistance work if you have it, then chuck yourself about once your knees/ankles/upper body is stronger.

Like you said you may have just went a bit OTT first, it'll never hurt as much as the first time and it does get loads easier.

I'm doing workouts on youtube/zoom and facebook live if you or anyone else is interested. All abilities welcome.

You do whats best for you I have porridge every weekday for breakfast , but a bacon sarnie treat on Saturdays and sometimes a Sunday. The weekend is probably where I also eat a bag of crisps and a bar of chocolate , both family size unfortunately , afterwards I often feel guilty and feel like shit, but that inspires me to be good again on Monday, and so it goes on.. it works for me.

I woke up this morning stiff as a board so decided against circuits today. Instead we went for a long walk which registered as 7000 steps. I’m guessing that was about four to five miles. I worked on the old principle of not working the same muscle groups continuously. I can’t run because I injured my ankle badly years ago and it’s never been right since.

Dropped two kilos since the start of the week but that might include a good shite!

Probably easier in guess distance using time. Most people walk around 3.5 miles per hour if walking with purpose. Quite easy to do 4mph if you're trying to get a move on.

Anyone ever ran up the steps that are in Crimdon Dene? Whoever built them was on some sort of wind up, the steps are built at a height and distance apart , that means even when walking up them it's difficult. If you can run up them in one go , its a good indicator you are if not fit as , certainly not unfit , they are a bastard , and I would recommend them to anyone wanting to test themselves , obviously it would be unwise to try to run up them, if you are carrying too much weight or are unfit , but certainly a good stepping stone if you are a couple of months into a weight loss programme or exercise regime.

Ha! Crimdon steps. Yes, I used to run up them often. Three bloody times in a row! West rugby Sunday morning fitness training.
They were the shagger that finished everybody off before returning to the club for a few pints to undo all the good work.

Even worse than those steps are the ones at Malham Cove in the Yorkshire dales. Just descending them once would put my legs out of action for about three days.
I had to drive home quickly before the effects took root.

Definitely steps for rugby players. The thought of a few pints afterwards can be a big motivator though. There are even worse steps on the beach that take you up to the caravan site , opposite the railway bridge past the old Seagull pub. These would be the ultimate test if it weren't for them being in a bad state of disrepair , even walking up them , someone unfit would have to stop 3 or 4 times for breath. Walking up them in one would suggest you're not unfit.

I love crimdon dene for running and resistance work. Natures best gym.

I run up a couple of times a week n tackle the steps.

You think youre doing ok then that last bend absolutely kills you.

Did a few summer bootcamps up there last year, went down really well and raised some money for charity.

find the ones with half the steps missing is actually easier to get up than the winding steps further up. its a bit easier for me with my husky/alaskan malamute helping me up. will miss it this year as it looks like my sun holidays at the caravans will not happen.

Every time I get home I have a trip to Crimdon; I get the kids up those steps in one go, no problem.

It was , have done the same walk for last 3 days, never passed a soul until I got onto a stretch of the Hart to Haswell where there were cyclists galore. In the sun it was probably warmest I've known it this last week, but sky was clouding over as I walked. I wouldn't plan a walk for Wednesday, its going to be hoying it down, we could do with some rain though, been like walking on concrete lately.

Well it seems to be working. 1.6 kilos down since Monday. I was slightly lighter last time I weighed myself but I guess the trend is more important.
