I could quite easily move to West Yorkshire tomorrow, Halifax shouldn't be in there , lovely place, like anywhere it will have it bad parts. Huddersfield, Wakefield and Keighley might seem grim , but the surrounding countryside would more than make up for it for me. Rotherham, Donny, Stoke . Peterborough probably deserve to be in there, but Nottingham ? really ?. Hull and Middlesbrough used to regularly be in the top 3 , though both have improved over last 10 years would still have them in top 10. I would definitely have Luton and Blackburn in there.

What a load of shite. The tosser who wrote that has a problem. Some of the towns that surround London are appalling.
But is it not time that we as a country developed a proper regional policy that moves activity out of the south east hothouse to other areas.
This virus gives us a reminder that we fundamentally need to look at our society/economy and make changes.

What a refreshingly objective, unbiased, well-written article.

having lived in 3 of these and live in the other i have to agree. again another bit of anti northern bias. i have travelled through most of the country either working or going to matches and there is far worse out there. think we all have our top ten and anyone who does not put luton in it must either be blind or a top fan of the local football team. actually some of these picture postcard villages have not much to offer. travel miles to work or shop and even you cannot enjoy the countryside like i do as its all fenced off for farming.

Some of the areas in london are appalling never mind surrounding it. It's like those american tourists that think england is just london and they love it. Put them in south london or parts of east london and let them.tell.us how.much they love london.

That would make list of the ten worst websites in England. More ads than the Northern Echo and just as slow.

Bolton looked a bit shabby last time I was there and Grimsby surely should be in there. Has anyone been to Birkenhead? lovely pub just up from the ferry landing , but the fun stope there , the land that time for forgot , if I had a choice between living there or Peterlee I think I would end it all. Not far away the army use Runcorn to train in prior to military engagements in Syria , but it would be unfair to place a town so small in the top ten worst.

There are some shitty towns around London but no getting away from the fact that the heart has been ripped out of the majority of Northern towns due to 40 years of rampant Capitalism and neo- liberalism of Thatcher and Bliar , with investment going into building super cities instead.

Imagine we could've got our PPE a lot quicker if some of those clothing factories in Hartlepool and Peterlee hadn't been closed down.

Piece Hall is fantastic , especially when you consider the state of disrepair it fell into. It should be a national treasure , people go on about Rome etc but don't know these places exist on their own doorstep. The Dean Clough mill complex is impressive as well , incorporating hotels , bars and shops in what was once a huge mill complex.

if halifax was down south it would get more free publicity than it gets at the moment. everyone loves to knock bradford without ever giving the place a chance. however with all the areas money for tourism being concentrated on push bike races and haworth with the brontes and their unreadable books this is bound to happen.

You can get the Bronte books in English, Mr Accrington. And some are written with a Lancashire accent.

Yep forgot about Mansfield , definitely a top 10 , was a shithole even before the North was decimated. Basically anywhere that voted heavily in favour of Brexit has a good chance of making the top 20 never mind 10 :animals-dogrun:

Has Blackburn been demolished? It doesn't seem to be in the top 10 so it must have been.

Spent a year working in Havant, not grim, just no character, a lot of the south coast is pretty rough, but a lot are Tory strong holds too, pretty perplexing, or not given the past decade

Not the best is it? I think with places like Gillingham though , they are just boring , not so much grim. Ipswich could be another such place.

Regionalist, snobby shite.

The north may have plenty of less desirable areas, but at least housing is still within reach of a lot of people. And there is much greater community spirit.

I can't imagine living somewhere deprived and unpleasant like Gillingham or Slough where rent or mortgages or sky-high? No wonder there's so many angry miserable types living there.

I've no idea how Donny got in there either. I didn't see much to despair about the place when I lived near there. It seemed quite a dynamic town.
Derwent?

Like everywhere else, Monty, there's nice areas and some not so nice areas. I live nine miles from Donny and I like it. Good road links, rail links and an airport plus a cracking market, some nice pubs and restaurants, a classic race course and decent countryside to walk in. Clumber Park just down the road. Most of all the people are friendly. where did you live?

I've heard Slough is most realistic simulation of Grand Theft Auto one could possibly find.

Kent is grotty in general, can add Chatham, Folkestone and Dover to the list.

Shocked at the lack of Workington, Maryport and Barrow though.

Place called Crowle. Village about halfway between Donny & Scunny.

do not think these west coast towns are all that bad really. its just that time seems to have forgotton about em and give the feeling that they should be film sets for a 1940,s or 50,s films.
