Parking wardens are to gain new powers to fine motorists who stop briefly and drive away before they can be given a ticket.

The Department for Transport said that the measure, one of several new parking regulations due to come into force in March, would help to protect wardens from assaults by motorists and could also be used to fine drivers who simply drove away.

Under the present rules, a ticket is valid only if it is attached to the vehicle or handed to the driver.

A spokesman said that, under the new regulations, a warden would only have to start writing a ticket for it to be valid. The penalty could then be issued by post.

New guidance would encourage councils to cut congestion, “not make money”. The spokesman added that wardens should not be given targets for the number of tickets they should issue. Authorities would also be “discouraged” from clamping nonpersistent offenders but could do so if they wished.

Paul Watters, of the AA, said: “Wardens are meant to observe illegally parked vehicles for a minimum period but this will give them a short cut to issuing tickets.” He said that it would result in thousands of challenges by drivers.

Jesus H Christ, that one-eyed traffic warden who was a committee member in the Navy Club -is he still alive btw? - would have been in his element. The fascist t-wat-s have now just been given the power to fine people who are waiting in traffic lines.
I'm willing to bet right now, that if you're waiting in a queue of traffic at a red light and one of your passengers gets out, that they'll class it as parking on yellow lines or whatever. Even though you couldn't move anyway.
I'm also willing to bet that the number of wardens is going to increase exponentially in years to come.

I heard on the news today that they are trying to fine and issue points to those pepole that use gadgets to tell them when a speed camera is close by
