The report also noted that passengers were confused about the restrictions regarding carry-on luggage. Many 'did not believe in the threat the extra security is meant to guard against', it added. The report's authors said they were particularly shocked that many passengers were deliberately flouting the restrictions on liquids, introduced last August following the alleged plot to blow up airliners between Britain and the U.S.

Airport operators said nearly 7,000 tons of forbidden liquids and items were confiscated from travellers last year.

Security procedures at airports were 'lengthy, intrusive and frustrating' but 'absolutely fundamental' to the safety of passengers and national security, the report concluded.The committee's chairman, Gwyneth Dunwoody, said: 'We are clearly in trouble if our citizens are not buying in to national security policies.'

Could that be because terrorists threats do not come from holidaymaking pensioners and children carrying bottled water (how much of the 7000 tonnes of liquids were exactly that??) and people have trouble believing that toothpaste, aftershave and lipstick are dangerous weapons?? Like nail clippers and tweezers?? Isn't it obvious what the current crop of terrorists looks like??
