That's a pretty underwhelming team. Scary even.
Good job it's just about getting match practice!

I hope the opponents don't have any wingers

I dunno, Mckay and Foley running off the experienced Barker could cause a few problems.

is it just me, or does anybody else think that Foley will only ever score one or two goals per season??
In fact, in about two dozen first team appearances, am I right in saying he hasn't scored a League goal??

I hope the lad proves me wrong, but I've watched enough football to have a gut feeling about these things.

6 league starts 33 substitute appearences and and he hasn't scored yet, i agree with you, he's never going to be the the striker we want him to be.

26 of them 33 sub appearances have seen him play less than 25 mins. 15 of them 26 under 25 min appearances have seen him play less than 10 mins. 6 of them 15 min appearances have seen him play less than 5 mins.

During them 33 sub appearances he's barely been on the pitch. He's not a miracle worker. Plus he has scored, he scored against Rotherham.

Edit: Plus a lot of those appearances have been on the right wing.

He will forever be a bench player....supersub.
I just hope that in this squad any player who is better than what's in the team will be able force his way into the team. The presence of James Brown on the wing suggests that this is indeed possible.
The vicious circle can thereby be broken without our being in the shite.
The question is how many goals do our strikers have to fail to get before Foley can be given a chance without the manager being considered nuts (re: Daly for Boyd, Tinkler for Clark, etc.) :sweeeet:

It is possible that it's our second choice team and Wilson is aiming to play:

Lee-Barrett
McCunnie Antwi Nelson Humphreys
Brown Liddle Boland Monkhouse
Porter Moore

for the second match...

But the main priority will be match fitness.

I just hope Wilson isn't like Scott in considering that all his new signings have to play in the first team come hell or high water.
Again, Brown's presence on the wing in place of Gibb suggests this isn't the case.

How many times do you reckon he's actually played as a striker? I don't he's ever started a game as one, the times he did last season I remember (Rotherham in JPT when he scored, Chester, Darlo (h), and Bristol Rovers) where all as a right winger. In fact nearly all his sub appearances where as well.

So bearing that in mind don't you think your comments are at best a tad harsh?

Especially when nearly every time he did come he made a real impact, remember Peterborough at home? On about five minutes had three runs and shots one leading to Duffy poking in the winner. Thats not the actions of someone who is never going to score for me. He's had limited oppourtunities to play up front or even (another position he would do well) behind the front two.

on the right in a 4-4-2 formation, and with as you say only the last few minutes as a sub, you would still expect a couple of more goals. Maybe it's me, maybe the chances just haven't fallen his way yet.
However in a 4-3-3, if that is indeed the formation as suggested by the first post (and DW tried this several times early last season, so he must have some intentions of using it again) - then there is no hiding place so far as goals return is concerned.
At some point in time, we as fans, DW as manager, and the owners who pay the wages will want to see their forward players scoring goals. That is the bottom line. For this reason a player like Duffy would have been worth his weight in gold, because he has the knack of scoring goals when even so much as a half chance comes his way.
Regardless of other attributes to the game of any forward player, they must be able to be composed/clinical when the opportunity presents itself to score a goal. Jermaine Easter scored goals for fun in the reserves, but cost us vital points in several first team games because of crucial misses when it was easier to score. Hopefully all the forwards will do the business when they get the chances. I think Brown and Barker were most clinical in the front line last season. Maybe Foley will transfer his goalscoring form in the reserves to the first team, but he HAS to do it this season.

I know that he's played on the right a lot and i agree that he can cause problems when he comes on for 20 minutes at the end of a game but i've just don't see him banging in a significant amount of goals. He's a bit of a nuisance and can mix it up a bit but i think thats his level, if we got an injury i wouldn't have a problem putting him in for a game or two but no longer than that.

I hope he proves me wrong and bangs in a load of goals but i can't even see him getting in the starting line up as a striker for more than the 10-15 minutes he's getting now.

agree, I see Barker, Moore, Porter and Brown as the main four players used in out and out strikers roles. MacKay could also yet play his part if he develops quickly enough.
