....did the fans wind up an air raid siren whenever they had a corner? Was mid to late 90s I think?

Was it Lincoln?

It was Lincoln, in fact I think it is Lincoln as I’m pretty sure they still do it but I think it started during John Becks reign of total football.

A few World War 2 bomber airfields around that way so as much as it is annoying as f**k at a game I quite like the sentiment,

so why didn't they just defuse a bomb instead then?

Deffo Lincoln. I think we beat them 2-0 on the first day of the season there about 20 years ago, and all the Poolies started copying the noise after we scored.

I miss a day out there, one of the best in the lower leagues.

Worst ever time I ever attended a game was there, evening game during the week, in some lower league shitty cup thing.
Missed the first ten minutes coz it takes so long to get there from anywhere. I heard the goal go in on local Lincoln radio and we were one nil down when I got in. There was a freezing freezing fog and the bloody siren was going.
If we equalised it went to extra time.
Its the only time I ever (nearly) didn't want Pools to score. I couldn't see coz I was shivering so much.

Must be 20 years ago (give or take five'ish years).

Remember the heat. Was that the day we saw an unknown James Sharpe warming up? Not even a rumour about him beforehand.

One of the better away days Lincoln. First time for me was one Friday night in November 1980, with none other than our own Paulus is a woodgnome with a side salad. Must of only been 10 away supporters in the open terrace that ran down the side of the ground, that is now the stand were Lincoln have the siren.

Open Terrace, big clock! First time I went was 85 we won 4-1. Sunday game! Couple of years later we won 1-0 opening day (Andy Toman) stood on same terrace.

Don't remember the clock, but remember what is now the away end, had a railway line behind it, and when a train went past, it looked like it was on top of the stand. Didnt attend those games you mention, but remember the shock at seeing the score from that Sunday game, was living in Brighton at the time, we hadn't thrashed anyone away from home for years at the time or played away on a Sunday.

Yeah, it had a huge clock at the top of the Open Terrace, which might actually have been gone by the '88 game.

With a magnifying glass , you can just about see the clock in the middle. We were stood to the left of this all game, Lincoln had a big Skinhead following in 1980 and we wouldnt of dared go into the middle of that terrace. All 10 of us, and a couple are household name poolies kept a low profile.

And he was great that day and for the rest of that season!

It was also Lincoln where the sad news of Cyril Knowles being taken ill resulted in a ninety minute rendition of 'Cyril Knowles, Blue & White Army'.............a sad but fond memory.

That was Bradford wasn't it ? we were stood on the small covered side, well before the current stand was built ?

Remember at the services on the way to Bradford the fire brigade were doing a promo thing and giving out plastic fireman's hats, lots of poolies wore them to the game, not realising the significance of that!

Bradford was the day after Cyril died. Lincoln earlier in the year ( season before ) could of been the time we heard he was ill.

And Lincoln was indeed Alan Murrays first game in charge, so it must have been when we found out about Cyril.

Some great collective memories from Old Gits here!!

Who are these old gits you speak of Elvis?

I had relatives visiting me in Swindon the day we played Lincoln. On hearing we had been beaten 3-1 ( one Tony Lormor scored , as he always seemed to v us ) , it was as far as I was concerned the end of our slim promotion hopes. Of course a week later we thrashed Aldershot away and the embers caught fire. Not to make things easy for us, Pools then went on to get beaten at home 1-2 by Blackpool ( Mckinnon piledriver ) . The rest is history, after that it was more or less plain sailing. Its right what they say, the first time is always the best. Well it seemed like the first time for a certain generation after a 20 +year wait

Are you sure you have the right ground? There is no railway line near Lincoln's ground.

It would of been a train coming out of a station in the centre ( a mile away) , but it gave the impression it was closer than it was, and it happened, from where I was standing anyway , to look as though it was on top of the stand.

That would be Boothferry Park, Hull, the railway looked as though it pulled up at the back of the away stand. I remember us playing them in a F.A. Cup replay one Tuesday night down there, must've been 80's, we had a huge following, I remember vividly some of our fan's had made a large banner which depicted a monkey in a tree deficating on a tiger below, which incensed their fan's, resulting in the usual argy-bargy.
Also a large old pub next to the ground which we packed out pre kick off, I remember the landlord being extremely creepy, he had a collection of womans underwear on the wall behind the bar stpid , and when the bar emptied it revealed where some younger fan's of ours had scribbled 'HUFC' with black markers on virtually every part of the wall below 4 feet ......looked like wallpaper, even on the white tyre around the dartboard.

I'm sure I walked over walky railway bridge a few times, to get near Lincoln's ground from where I parked. Towards the left hand and of the big stand as where they put us next to the bloody siren.

clappp

Any Lincoln fans out there who can help? This is the only evidence I have , but I know what I saw and it was a night match, so a train a mile away lit up, would have stood out.

I remember the car overheating at every junction we stopped at on the way into Lincoln, I think every car I owned in the 80's developed a cylinder head gasket problem, I also broke down in a Ford Cortina on the way to a Barnsley away game around that time. I can't remember that train at Lincolns ground, but I was if you remember keeping one eye on that gang of skinheads who surrounded us near the end of the game.

That was a weird game.

I remember losing to them ON MY FUCKEN BIRTHDAY in a night game at the start of November which sent us bottom under Turner. We totally dominated by somehow lost.

It was the season we ended up sneaking into the play offs.

The train looking like it pulled up beside Hull’s ground (the derelict side of Boothferry Park to the left of the away end (Kwiksave End) when I watched Pools there) would be because there used to be a station outside the ground. I remember my granda telling me he got the train to ‘Ull to watch Sunderland there when he was 20-odd year old (which would make it about 1937ish) and he said the train station was literally behind the away terrace down the side of the ground.
