Fair enough... let's post a test. Why is the font on a standard Android mobile so large...

OK, evidently dome progress.

What I've been trying to do is make you all aware of a stunning 1968-69 team photo I have cone across.

I'll post this first and see what happens...

Scary... the 'Preview' option doesn't seem to recognise this at all. Let's go...

I'm still concerned about why you chose that as your username.

Looks like the problem is that the image is too large for posting on the forum.

What we have is a superb team photo from the 1968-69 season. It's the centrepiece of a publication entitled 'Football League Review' (VOLUME THREE Number 23), which is a full colour, 12 page insert within a football program.

There's also a full page article therein entitled, 'MAN and MANager', featuring 'GUS McLEAN (Hartlepool F.C.)'.

If anyone would like to email myself at:

acerimmer7@gmail.com

...I would gladly reply simply sending both as an e-mail attachment. Maybe someone can find a way of posting same to the forum, if they wish?

The bizzare thing is that I was revisiting my old Patrick Thistle programs and discovered this insert in the Thistle v Rangers program from 1 January, 1969.

Why was this English league publication included? I have absolutely no idea and can't recall ever seeing anything similar!

The reason for the topic title was simply that I was sure I noticed another topic featuring a Gerry Rafferty song title (Stuck in the Middle...?), although I can't find that now!

The username? Well why wouldn't you... what a legend.

Football League Review was inserted in loads of Pools programmes in the early 70s. I'd always assumed that it would be the same at most clubs but maybe some didn't bother. All I remember about it is that it was colourful but dull and only worth reading if the match got really boring.

Yep - still got all my old programmes but threw away the Football League Reviews and had completely forgotten about them till this thread.

I remember FL reviews as being very interesting and informative, but maybe that's why I am the football supporter I am today. I have hundreds of Pools programmes I am looking to get rid of , if anyone interested.

Looking at that team they should have done better in Div 3 but it wasn't to be.

Absolutely Sir - magnificent effort!

I brought this topic up as I've simply been a 24/7 football fan all my days and having just turned 60 last month, was revisiting my earliest football programs that have survived.

Having come across this 'Football League Review' insert within a Partick Thistle v Rangers program dating from 1st January, 1969, I wondered if that centrepiece photograph might be of historical interest - especially given it's contemporary, high quality and in colour.

I hope this has duly been of interest, perhaps particularly to those who grew up watching football in that same era...

Fancy a challenge folks....?

I mentioned that additionally within that insert, there was an interview with the then manager, Gus McLean.

Much of this is an explanation of how his hobby was instrumental in dealing with the stress of management.

Was his stated hobby well known at the time?

If not, no one could guess it and I would be delighted to reveal further if you wish.

Wasn't he Welsh? despite having a Scottish name. I'm guessing Leek Growing, playing in a brass band or shagging sheep

Keeping in mind this is just a bit of fun - although he was the manager at that time!

Some further clues from the article:

'But like many of the men in his profession, Gus McLean occasionally likes to relax and forget about work for a while. He reckons to have found the perfect answer... a hobby that demands the utmost concentration, that wipes everything else out of his mind'.

'Gus reckons that * is tailor-made for managers as a pastime.

"It is not a hobby that has to be done all at once, you can leave it on one side for months and pick it up to start from where you left off. It's a hobby that is satisfyingly as well as relaxing. You make something out of nothing".'

Given the above clues, if I was to have a bet... he likes completing jigsaws?

It's not that though...

'The McLean household is decorated with the end product of his hobby... firescreens, rugs, pictures...'

So... if you think about it, what hobby would encompass all three - perhaps a massive clue is those firescreens?

The answer is....

....I was genuinely about to reveal it there and then thought that given most of you are probably so bored as myself awaiting the new season's kick off, why not leave the answer until later today and leave it open for someone to maybe suss it out beforehand.

I can however, meantime, most certainty assure this has nothing to do with a predilection for any farm animal.

Slight delay in responding....

Circa ten o'clock last night I was about to explain the full perspective of that interview when the sky lit up blindingly, followed instantly (I think the storm might have been directly overhead at this point!) by thunder which was indescribably deafening and I would almost swear shook the entire house.

And then the power goes out...

So, back up and running and the prize goes to...

Who came closest to guessing....

Tapestry.

Tapestry? that's a coincidence, the same hobby as Don Revie, Bill Shankly, Brian Clough, Arsene Wenger, Claudio Ranieri and Pep Guardiola.

Anyone got Bates phone number?

So much appreciated - you have been welcoming. Aside from the photo, I thought this interview was a nice wee snapshot of that time.

Incidentally, I'll have you know that Bill Shankly could knit a fairisle jumper in under a day.

Little known fact, that one.
