Now this is something I do know about. In the example quoted, the lens would have to be resting at the actual surface water level to coincide with the distance quoted.
However, it can be proved much more simply, park up at Seaton and watch with a pair of binoculars as a ship disappears over the horizon. I spent several years plotting Admiralty charts and never lost a ship yet. Not one single report of a minesweeper going over the edge. I think we'd have noticed or at least been sent a note.
Even odder still, my dad was a ships engineer. His regular route was from Hull to Australia via the Suz canal and back via the US and Canada. A round the world trip and he came back every time.

But did your dad go round the ball world or around a flat type of disc a circular way. sctatchinghead Could you please expand a little regarding the Seaton binoculars situation because it sounds the same sctatchinghead

If the earth was flat surely all of the satellites constantly orbiting it wouldn't come back?

It could always be flat in a burst tyre kind of way, or off key, or a bit lifeless, or up for rent, or have lost its bubbles, or need charging, or not be involved in hurdles or steeplechases, or just be flat out spheroidal.

I find this one of the most amusing aspect of this really amusing subject.

They actually originally thought the World was flat so if they'd have discovered the World was flat hundreds of years ago the reaction would have been "ah ok we thought that" I'm not sure why the reaction would "ohhh shit, we need to start the most complex wide scale lie in the history of the human race, one that to pull off almost more people will have to be in on than not" your immediate reaction in response would be "why?" to which the other bloke could only say "I don't know mate, call it gut feeling"

Its quite a major part that hasn't been thought through really and not a small point, their is no reason at all to lie about it. I'm sure as they have made this up as they go along from the outset they will have thought of an answer to this question, and it will be crackpot.

If the earth was indeed flat the bunker detectives would have uncovered the greatest cover up in human history years ago FACT

Tell the people what they want to hear, Whilst doing what you intended to do in the first place.

Meanwhile Rocket Man, who was going to overshadow the Superbowl viewing figures with his launch, cried off yet again. Who woulda thunk it?

My understanding is that it is about how the truth impacts our world view on other things, and links to religion. Before the spherical Earth was proven (it's been theorised since the dawn of civilisation) people's understanding of a flat Earth was that it was a layer, between Heaven and Hell.

I know that this is not what you were suggesting, but it's a common misconception that the Church banned the idea of heliocentrism and a spherical earth. It didn't.

It shrugged Copernicus's theory off and apart from one or two religious gobshites, it did nothing to discourage the scientific community from subscribing to it.

It was only 70 years later when Galileo came along and the Pope took a personal dislike to him, putting him under house arrest for the rest of his life, that the church started denigrating heliocentrism, but by then the rabbit was out of the hat and the church only looked foolish.

As for the flat earth theory, nobody has ever found a shred of evidence of a non-bogus official stance against the idea of a round earth. Nor is there any evidence that Columbus sailed out to prove the earth was round. Quite the opposite: he, like just about everybody else, took it for granted that it was a sphere. His idea was to sail to India through the back door. Unfortunately the Yanks got in his way.

How to settle point.

1. Take flight to Dublin.
2. Spend night in Dublin, enjoy.
3. Catch early ferry to Holyhead.
4. Look towards Anglesy and enjoy a drink.
5. Watch as Snowdonia emerges from the sea in the east.

I'm willing to bet Rocket Man never observed the slightest evidence to suggest the earth is spheroidal.
So that's it then. He's proved it's flat.
