to be fair, he was quite an interesting presenter. I admire people who know lots of different stuff like that. Fred Dibnah was one of my favourite ever tv presenters - although I recently heard a story about him from a bloke who works for Byworth Boilers, who said that Fred was not particularly well-liked in industrial circles around his native North West. Mutley was shocked about that too when I told him.

Very surprising about Dibnah.

If I remember rightly wasn't it PK who reckons the bloke to be a true gent and absolute legend? sctatchinghead

Yes, jazz. You want to make a thing of it?

(Was quite a good story in tha paper this morning...Melly had commented on the multi-lined aspect of Mick Jagger's mug, and when Jagger explained they were laughter lines, Melly said, 'but nothing's that funny')

One of my secret ambitions is to open a jazz dive like there used to be in Paris and Berlin before the war. Full of decadence and blue cigarette smoke

I've always fancied having a drink at the bar of one of those New York jazz clubs. Just to say I've done it. What's life for after all?

I'm not a great jazz fan but saw George Melly several times - it was more like theatre & his enthusiasm was catching. A great man who loved life. He had lung cancer and dementia but refused medication & perfomed up until about a month ago. Great to listen to, he had one of those voices I could listen to forever - whatever the subject. I've also got the record with him singing Old Codger with the Stranglers (as mentioned in earlier).

RIP - Good Time George

I was very sad to hear of the death of George Melly yesterday, even though he was 80, and obviously had one hell of a life. Jazz music is certainly not an interest of mine, but when a character liked George was performing who cares what you called what he was doing, he was simply brilliant at whatever he did. For anybody who never saw him, your life is a little less richer.

I last saw him at Stockton about a year ago. He was clearly very ill and had to sit down to do the gig but his voice hardly seemed to have changed at all. The place was packed out and the reception he got was quite moving

No Mr Baptist, the little I know about Dibnah is from years ago when an ex-bewer of mine's father had a one of them bloody great fairground steam engines and we used to take it to steam rallies ever weekend. Dibnah had just started doing those demolition programmes on telly, and with his steam roller, used to be at the same ones often but he was a bit caught up in his own celebrity, or else very shy, and could be quite standoffish if you tried to talk to him. The other geezer (George??) was OK though and he'd chat away happily.

I don't think he allowed himself to be limited to hats of any particular shade - tho the section of his autobiography covering his naval service is called Rumbumandconcertina ....

I've just watched an hour and a half of Fred Dibnah programmes on UKTV History on the freeview. He was ace. I can't think of any other presenter who is anything like him.

I was lucky enough to see Fred shortly before he died, he did 'An evening with Fred Dibnah' at one of the theatres in Nottingham. It basically consisted of him standing on a stage telling the audience about some of the amusing times he's had, from being a schoolboy, apprentice, national service etc. Absolutely superb. Tragically, I don't think it was filmed, and as far as I'm aware none of his 'evenings with' were recorded.

I had no idea he was critically ill, and was really shocked when I found out he'd died. Similar to when John Peel did.

I imagine he was a bit cantankerous, but he can be forgiven for the sheer enthusiasm he displayed when talking abou things like the murder holes and fortifications of Beaumaris castle.

I don't know a lot about George Melly, but he seemed like he made the most of his life.
